Hi

I am a 18 yo student from belgium and I'm really into wavesailing. Back in Belgium we don't always have the best conditions. Obviously in december and february it's freezing cold there.


Since I am graduated from highschool, I really want to do something different in my life now I'm still young. So I decided to go working abroad for half a year. Because windsurfing is almost half of my life it was evident that I wanted to go to a place where you could sail in wintertime (for us, so in the summer for you ). Perth is just looking like the perfect location. I have always dreamed of going to Australia someday to windsurf. The city looks very cool with the universities and cultural activities and above all, the windsurfspots just laying next to it.

I could ask you tons of questions but maybe I'll just wait for some of your thoughts first.
If you have some advice (or if you know someone who did something similar) don't hesitate to share it.

Check out the WWA calendar and come to the WWA opening events for starters.

There are great shops with good guys running them to gear you up properly. PM me if you need any specific info but any of them you can trust to put a package of gear together for you before you come so you can just pick it up and go sailing!!

First wave event for the the season will be Green Head 16/17th November by the way..WWA not yet posted the calendar dates on their website but they will shortly so keep checking!

The usual thing is to bring a couple of girls from your home country with you. Also, hand the local aussie sailors a cold beer at the end of each day sailing. Belgian beer is acceptable.

What is the best spot for wavesailing near Perth and which is best for most common winddirections?
I've read some things about Scarborough and Cottesloe but are there big differences or better places?

I'd like to know this because I would like to settle somewhere near a spot if that would be possible.
I don't know yet if it will be possible to afford a car there so living nearby one would be great or near someone to carpool with.

I'll try to bring some girls too, and smuggle some belgian beer in my boardbag

What cultural events in Perth?

I know of only two:
Green Head 16/17th November
Ledge to Lancelin January 11th 2014.

There are also a few minor cultural events like Wednesday evenings slaloms on Pelican Point etc...

If you are willing to travel you'll score great conditions north or south of Perth.
Perth's OK but nothing epic. Scarborough will be best for side/on sailing.
Lancelin is probably closest for good wave conditions.
Remember, the higher quality girls/beer you bring, the higher quality places you'll be told about.

Living without a car in Perth is not that easy.
Our public transport is nothing like Europe's.
The trouble with Perth's wave sailing, there are spots within 100kms that have nice shaped waves with good wind direction, but Perth itself isn't that good.
Scarborough picks up the swell well, but the seabreeze is fairly onshore. The Dutch Inn (near Cottesloe) has better wind direction and a more consistent shaped reef break, but it's only a short ride and needs a much bigger swell that Scarborough.
Depending on what sort of work you can get, Geraldton would be a better option, wind and waves are better than Perth.

If you have 6 months, ideally those months will be October - March or maybe November - April
May and June have few windy days and July August and September are sporadic, relying on winter fronts.

Coros will probably have better conditions but is still quite a long walk if I won't be able to pay for a car.

Will the reef break spank me or is it modest in size and power (and depth)?

Does the spot work well with the summer breaze?

The walk from gero to coros is doable... in about 1 day.

Seriously I think you need to accept you will need to buy a car, most visitors buy a van/ estate which also means they don't have to pay accommodation and have transport.

Point moore is good but there are other spots.. out of walking distance.. but within driving distance.

Remember usually if you buy a car/ van you get most of what you spent back when you sell it.... so maybe borrow some money. If you are working you will easily earn enough to afford one.

And all the spots are working in the summer sea breeze, but most depend on how much swell is around.

There are 2 breaks at Pt More, there's a left hander straight out in front, but the ride is a bit short. Hells gates is to the North of the point, but it's a bit tricky. We lost a German wave sailor out there several years ago.
I prefer the waves at Sunset beach, if something goes wrong it's not kilometres from shore downwind like hells gates.
Any where from St Georges to Sunset, would be good to stay, not sure what Gero public transport is like, but with a bike you could get into town in minutes.
