Hi all

I'm going to australia this summer (with a little delay, I should be there now actually..) and the organisation that manages my flight tickets say that I can bring 15kg of extra windsurf gear for free.
That means that I will be able to bring a board, mast, boom and 1 sail. I'm planning to buy 1 or 2 second hand sails over there but that can take a while. So the main question is:

which size is the best allrounder if you know that:
- I weigh 60 kg (yes, little guy I am)
- My board is a 76l (single fin)
- My plan is to go to geraldton but I can be stuck in Perth too for a little while
- I only have 4.2/4.7/5.2 sails
- I am an intermediate wavesailor

Having sailed on holidays to Geralton for 15 years every year is different there is no typical wind strength, Some years my 6.3m was most used, some years my 4.7m, (I'm 95kg) impossible to say one size will be the best or most used!

As you are landing in Perth, I would bring 5.2 with you as that gives you the most chance of being able to sail if there is a couple of windy days and you have not yet found other size sails to buy.

If you're going to be in Perth most of the time then bring the 5.2. I'm 85ish kg and my most used sail is a 6.0.
If you're going to be in Gero most of the time bring your 4.7 or 4.2 perhaps. I used to live in Greenhead which is about halfway to Gero and my most used sail at the time was a 4.7 and I probably weighed about 80kg at the time.

Either way there's heaps of decent used gear around so you'll be able to pick up a couple of extra sails fairly quickly.

He said he will buy the other sails here (not that he will be restricted to one sail for the whole trip).
Even as a lightweight..... if you lobbed into Perth and still had to find 2 sails, which could take a few days, I'd rather have the 5.2 if I were him? Same as an average sized guy only having 5.7 for Perth in late Nov........

Dude 4.7 would be my choice, the difference between 4.7 and 5.2 is so marginal anyway, just a few pumps away :) Especially if you are wave riding, I would go on 4.7 if I was off the plane anyway.

Yes 5.2 will allow you to sail in the slightly lighter stuff - but there is nothing worse than not being able to enjoy sailing when its really blowing!

Or go on seabreeze, see what other sizes are available and take what is not. That would prob be the 5.2/4.7.

Looked around in the buy and sale, and looks like there's lots of affordable stuff over there mostly around 4.7.
I personally was hoping not to bring my vandal 5.2 because I don't like her so much. Its also quiet a big sail on my 76l if there aren't so much waves (like in Perth I think?). that 5.2 weighs also a bit more and 15 kg is already a bit tricky to get to. But on the other hand, I saw already some good 4.5 nd 4.7's on the forum so that means better to buy one in WA and bring an other size.

I'm going to weigh my gear in a moment, could maybe force me to bring my 4.2...

aahhh yes its quite easy to sit on the beach on a 5.2 day but when its a 4.2 day

I think you'll be pushing it. Have you thought about just buying three used sails. There are a ton of fairly cheap sails around. Then when you leave simply sell it a good price and it should move quickly. Or why not check with some of the shops. They might even be interested in doing a buy back situation.

Definitely better then paying hundreds for excess luggage.

Allright, news from the scales: mast + boom + board = almost 15kg so false alarm... Need to come up with a new plan. stehsegler had it right

Hey Senne,

Just worth checking - if the airline says you can bring 15kg of windsurf gear, I'm guessing you've already got a 23kg or so luggage allowance.

It might be worth looking carefully at this, as you could maybe bring board, boom, mast for 15kg, and also bring a sail or two (one sail bag, two sails wrapped in it) as part of your regular luggage. If they ask, just say it's a boat sail and completely separate from the rest.

I know this sounds mad, but for years I used to travel with windsurf kit and tell Qantas that it was a surfboard - they would allow surfboards but not windsurfers. (Fortunately they've changed the rules now).

Look carefully at the fine print and the size restrictions of your regular luggage - you might be ok.

It is going to be 2 wave sails 4.2 and 4.7 (5.2 weighs too much). But... Now comes the second question: Which board should I buy?

intermediate wavesailor
Will not sail in masthigh+ conditions (I think) but would like to sail in boom - 2m swell and after a while bigger.
Not planning to be in Perth that much
Don't want to spend more than 720 AUD.

around 75 liters multifin? What do you think?
