Is Windsurfing WA going to have a display there? Sounds like every other sport will be there, but couldn't find anything about windsurfing.

It was discussed at a committee meeting but it is very difficult to arrange three full days of staffing on a stand using only volunteers. Plus we had to pay to be there. We felt member's funds and time could be put to better use.

WTF? Isn't promoting the sport part of Windsurfing WA's constitution? If I was a betting man I would put 20 bucks on Kitesurfing WA being there!

Promoting any sport is best done with helping the grass roots, being visible and helping all the pathway from beginner to elite.
As i see it WWA has a well rounded pathway: come try days, a good relationship with the hire vans, is visible at most events, has its own events and promotes the national organisation.
And the target audience is beach going people interested in fitness, fun, thrills and good times.
WWA is there promoting to the right people, in the right locations.

The scale of the sport is small and grander promotion like AFL, Cricket or even cycling is not possible.

We also promote amongst ourselves, and the WWA- something quite a few bigger sports have to pay people to do!

I am a bit diappointed in WWA there. Why not at least throw a post on here and see who might be interested in manning the stand (doesn't have to be members doing it)
I'd have happily done it for half a day on each of 2 days, but never knew anything about it.

I reckon there would have been a great reaction to a TV showing wave and freestyle or speed videos.

Come along and try days are all well and good but a lot of people don't think they wanna try (they think windsurfing is still like the 1970' s bobbing around on a 13ft long board.)
The best way to get them in is to show them something awesome when they just walked past croquet, cricket and lawn bowls displays.

Mark, the attendance has been pretty poor. All sports had the TV going and even Rugby had the XBox game for kids.
And the most excitement has been when kids can have a go- ride a bike or throw a lacrosse thingy or have a sword fight. Sadly no swimming pool or Boeing 747 fans available for a windsurfimg demo.

I reckon a "come and try Windsurfing day" in conjunction with the Come and Try sailing days promoted by the Yachting Association of WA. And our 2 river based windsurfer hire companies donate gear and coaching whilst we encourage people to participate- friends, family and workmates.- That might get some new blood....

Durring my trip around the block, its the same story Australia wide, people are hanging onto their coin. (sorrry to detract from the thread)

valid point mineral- its a pricey event to attend as well. It was mostly families looking to get 7-12 year olds into a sport- seeing what they like...

Well isn't that a great opportunity to show them windsurfing? Surely we have slightly better role models than AFL or rugby...
