Hi west aussies - coming over from BNE for work on Sunday and have scored the long weekend off in PER so am bringing some gear.
If I look at the forecast this Sunday for PER for next Fri-Sun to decide whether to bring big gear (112L / 7.2 & 6.5) or smaller gear (95L / 6.5 & 5.5) - in your experience does the forecast hold?

I would say go with the 112 combo youve mentioned.

Thats without knowing your weight, and assuming youre not planning on tripping further north than Lanno...

We're kinda getting screwed around by ex cyclone whatsherface at the moment, but the pattern should be back by Sunday.

75KG's so was thinking the bigger gear and if it gets windy I will just hold on tighter.
Looking at GPSTC seems Melville or Safety bay are the go in and around PER. Will there be plenty to share the water with at either location?

Yep, rig at Carlilse st boat ramp or the pond if sailing safety bay. Theres a regular local crew down there.

Rig at mellvile beach rd carpark if sailing melville. Plenty of people sailing there on a windy day

safety bay has a variety of sailing conditions to choose from, open ocean conditions/slightly choppy blasting conditions and flat water. Melville is flat but gusty. As usual ask a local where to sail/where not to sail, especially melville. Theres a few shallow spots to look out for.

edit: theres also pelican point which is reasonably close to the city. You can do an upwinder/downwinder to melville and back if youre into that sorta thing. Choppy conditions on a saturday/sunday with the boat traffic on melville waters.

Are you planning on sailing on the river or the Ocean? Are you prepared to drive or do you want to sail in Perth?Saturday / Sunday will be light... from looking at the charts I'd say it will steadily increase through out next week. Anything after Wednesday next week is a wild guess.

SW, Augusta looks to be on this Sunday, but it is a long drive. I certainly hope to get there.

Personally I would avoid the city on Friday 26th and head to safety bay unless you are staying near Melville. Its going to be a little busy.

Bring everything then you will get 7 days straight sailing.

second'ed ... sort of... Perth has excellent Oz Day celebrations - if you do get a parking spot, you can stay for the fireworks !

Safety Bay it is with a drive back to PER just in time for the fireworks - good day out by the sounds of it!!

If it's a SW wind definitely come down to Safety Bay, great runs and some guys go around the islands, beautiful speed spots, just a great spot to sail! Better than battling the hordes around Perth....

Well I have arrived with my gear - can.t wait till the weekend.
Went for a walk this arvo and saw some guys blasting across Melville today.
Gunna try and get away from work early enough on Thursday to get down there for a look.

Just one question - looking at GPSTC seems most guys are using weedys over here - do I really need one?
Looking forward to getting on the water with you guys.

Welcome to the wildwest. You won't need a weedy at Melville. Most the guys that use a weedy do so that want to get onto the speedruns over the sandbar, which can be quite shallow but where the smoothest runs are. If you are just blasting back and forth, any pointer will do, but do talk to the locals about the marker poles on the sand bar which is about 500m from the shore. Have fun.

You'll need a weed fin at Safety bay or Mandurah or any speed strip that works in summer time.

I was at safety bay today Bones - had a blast - GPS didn't save my log so gunna have to go back again tomorrow to get evidence!!
