I know you guys must be now thinking, "not this bloke again!" I will try and make this my last post regarding my trip.

Done the research and have managed to get a good deal on a camper van for the 3 weeks. Thing is. When I look at the overnight charges at the camping sites you are looking at between $40-$60 per night.

Do most people stay at proper campsites at Lano and Gero, or is it like a big communal setup where you can just rock up and park the van near the beach?

I also don't want to book at camp sites only to find that the windsurfer crowd stay at other places in those 2 areas.

Thanks

Does't help much for in town, but FWIW, you can camp anywhere that is more then 20kph from a town with a caravan park. Eg: roadside rest areas in middle of nowhere.
Dunno about Gero, but at Lano you will get stung by the Ranger for camping, especially at the beach

If you bring single European women with you, you can usually crash on someones couch for free.
Otherwise, like Mark said, camping on the road side or beaches out of town is free.

Um lano allows people to camp behind the bakery for free... have done this many times.

Basically there are loads of spots to camp, which are free, and much nicer than being in a camp site. Its part of the fun of exploring.. you can't plan everything out hour by hour!!

Worst case you will be caught by the ranger and charged $50 - which is a couple of nights camping....

Just go for an unpowered site, should be cheaper or as Mark says find one of the numerous roadside stops, they're free and most have tables, shade and free BBQs. Or camp illegally on the beach or wherever, worst case scenario you'll get a fine from the ranger, but that will be a rarity and being a tourist you can probably talk your way out of it.

If you are bogged on a beach overnight you are not camping (just carry a snatch strap for the ranger)
If you are fishing overnight on a beach you are not camping
just a couple of tips from experience with rangers
