Screamin' Leeman", the epic windsurfing event is back.
The "Screamin' Leeman Roy Bell Memorial Classic" is to be held on the 25th and 26th of November 2017. This event is a tribute to the late Roy Bell from Leeman who was a driving force in the Leeman community, a great character, and a man who took on ideas and made things happen. He created one of the best downwind races on the windsurfing circuit, but sadly passed away in March 2010. The race was legendary, often held in 20-30 knot winds and often taking a large toll on sailors and their equipment. The start of the race used a real shotgun and Roy's pre-race instructions said that if you broke the start, you would get a sizeable hole in your sail! That never happened of course (blanks?), but no-one ever went over early!
Roy's slogan, 'Say no to Five-0' was particularly relevant back then, meaning that you needed to use a much smaller sail than usual and most years he was absolutely right as those who rigged bigger than 5 metre with the old 1990's sails, struggled with the strengthening winds as the race progressed down the course.
The original race was about 30 km from South Bay at Green Head to Leeman but was later shortened to start at Little Anchorage (mid-way between the two towns) and finished at Leeman. This memorial race will use the shortened course but will still be about the same as the Ledge to Lancelin. The planned start will be at Little Anchorage on Saturday at 1pm (provided we have favourable conditions) and the finish will be on the beach about 300m South of the main jetty near the Lee Gilmore Skate Park with the sailors battling for line honours expected a little after 1.25pm. Held inside the main reefs the course area can provide small swell, choppy, and sometimes weedy conditions. Most legs are set at 110 degrees to the usual Seabreeze direction for a nice fast run. Course safety supported by Leeman Volunteer Sea Search and Rescue.
Note - Sunday is the reserve day for the marathon event should the wind not cooperate on Saturday afternoon as planned.
With Saturday's race running as planned, then Slalom racing is scheduled to be held at Little Anchorage until 2pm on Sunday to round off the event.
The Saturday evening of the 25th of November will see a dinner (included in the entry fee) and presentation function at the Leeman Country & Sporting Club as we acknowledge the contribution Roy made to the windsurfing, and wider community.
This will be a special occasion including a perpetual trophy presentation to the winner of the race.
Entry fee - $85 including Saturday night dinner and Sunday Slalom @ Little Anchorage.
