Thoughts anyone on the forecast for Saturday. It looks kinda ominous with the possibility of a thunder storm. But big swell and a strong wind. Do you think that the wind would be a bit too gusty as they are forecasting 25-29kn? I know that I struggle when it’s above 32kn, that’s when I start to resemble that ragdoll being torn apart by the Jack Russell

My thoughts: ocean = consistent westerly all day 25 to 30. River = Gusty Westerly all day.
Best spots South Beach Freo, Mandurah, Lieghton Beach, pinnaroo point, Point Kennedy

There's usually a good crew at Shoalwater on these conditions
Park at Penguin Island jetty carpark or the lions park at the end of McLarty street.

And a bit further down the coast at Margarets they have a 35knt & 6m swell forecast. Id love to just go and look at it. Probably get wet up on the lookout!

Looks like a slow (ish) moving front too so should be quality. I am with Rider

I am new to the winter scene (cannot drag the old body on the rugby field anymore) and I need to learn to read seabreeze for these winter fronts.

Would "Gearies" down in Mandurah work based on the current forecasts or is it likely to be too westerly? I assume there will be enough swell (!?!).

When am I more likely to get some good wind? Morning or Afternoon? When the wind has just turned WSW or later?

I have heard the car park can be dodgy. Is this really a risk? Any recommendation?

IMHO a more precise look at exactly where it will be how windy then the Seabreeze graphs.

The BOM like to exaggerate I still think it'll be mainly westerly all day. I don't care if I'm wrong, I'll still get to sail.

Now in terms of actual conditions on the spot, is this too dead west for Gearies in Mandurah or is it worth heading down?

Yeah not a bad forecast. Should be a few waves down this way

I am on holidays from SA and will be in Mandurah on sat. Keen to get a sail in but unsure where to park/launch around Mandurah. Also westerly will be onshore for this part of Coast? Is this what I should expect? Haven't had a chance to try out my new 4.2blade so keen as. Any advice/help for a travelling sailor would be appreciated.

My understanding is that W-WSW is side/side-on at Gearies, next to Avalon, down in Mandurah, because of the particular angle of the beach. I understand that Saturday swell should be generating some pretty good waves too.
Having said that, I have not sailed it yet so there will be others on this forum much better placed to advise you.

Beware of the shore break just north of the carpark at Gearie's. It's called buckets, because the reef there is full of bucket diameter holes, some deep enough for your hole leg to fit into. A very good way to snap a leg or mast if either of them get stuck in one when a head high wave hits you!

WSW is still a bit onshore at gearie's but it's ride able, in the conditions predicted for Saturday, it could approach mast high out the back, and half 3/4 mast on the inside.
If the conditions there are a bit too extreme/onshore, I've had a fun sail off the end of Roberts point (halls head) in a westerly storm, ride out to the break on the reef and back to the point.
Inside Avalon bay is also a hoot, the reef protects the lagoon from most of the chop/waves but some swell surge gets over, high speed roller coaster ride!

Safety Bay good for jumps?

Howling solid at Pt Peron in front of Garden Island. I stopped by watched for 10 min and it didn't varied, this is more constant than the usual cold front.

Didn't see anyone in the water there, shoalwater or Safety bay until 30 min ago. I am to wimp to battle the cold today (my hand is still shaite after a fracture) and painful enough already.

Good sailing to the brave ones...take the 4.2 or less

Yep 4.2 was sweet, or too much mostly. Lovely clean ramps lining up out side and plenty of flying spray - bloody awesome day! (sorry Mark)
