As you know there is some chatter regarding the marathon/slalom/gps around at the moment and it got me thinking.
I've decided to bight the bullet and try and run an event
So i contacted the SBYC commodore Anthony Saw in regards to using their facilities to host a slalom series weekender.
He has agreed to let us use their Start and Rescue boats and club/bar facliities too.
Anthony has also suggested possible camping on the grounds for Saturday night if he can get council permission.

I'd like to get an idea of numbers before i commit my time into orgainsing an event, so if people are keen to participate or even help out in some way (WWA/SBWC?) PM me and we can get the ball rolling

I'd like to look at holding it sometime either early or late feb

I'm keen as mustard to race and camp. So does that mean we race Saturday and sunday?

We would make it a weekend for the whole family and I can organise a mobile coffee stall/van just let me know! Top stuff!!

Ok so preliminary discussions are around the 21-22nd of Feb.

Initial plans for the weekend are as follows

1000-1200hr Registration (2 x Boards + 3 x Sails)
1100hr Skipper's Meeting
1300hr 5min warning for 1st heat

Course will be Classic M or W downwind slalom

There will be a round robin style group stage where each groups sail 3-4 heats (time depending)
The top half of each group go into Gold Div Semis 1 & 2
The bottom half go into silver div semis 1 & 2
Top half places of semis go into div Finals
And the top Half of gold and silver finals sail off in a winners final

So no matter what everyone should get at least 4 or 5 races in

Bit of time after racing to enjoy a free sail then presentations and dinner & drinks @ 1800 followed by some entertainment
Sunday maybe have a SUP/kayak out to Penguin island or something in the morning
Then do it all again finish by 1630

Make it a W downwind course. Quicker races and chance for guys on free ride gear to compete rather than slogging upwind.

Ok everyone. I have had some good feedback from the windsurfing community.
So the 21-22 of Feb is locked in.
Camping is still on the cards with a maximum of 50 people.
Sailors will need to be a member of WWA or an affiliate for insurance purposes.

Looks good, any word on approval for camping.
I noticed a couple of weeks ago there was a lot of caravans etc there over the long weekend, possibly a kiting convention.

Yes, SBYC got council approval for the Aust. Day long weekend regatta.
This is the same approval we will be seeking.
Anthony Saw (SBYC Commodore) is chasing this up as we speak.
As soon as i have the confirmation i will post it.

On a side note, If this is deemed as a success, we might be able to include this racing series in next years Long weekend regatta given enough notice to the yacht club.

Is there any other way i can pre pay (and i guess consequently register) Stu/WWA? Im dead set keen to do this event, but I dont own either of those cards (mastercard/VISA)

Im going to be down that way a fair bit this week if that makes a difference. I can also EFT the amount....

Ok, an update on the camping request.

The Rockingham City Council - Rangers Service has not granted approval for camping.
Here is an excerpt from the email:

"The City’s Rangers Dept will not be granting approval for camping during this windsurfing event. As far as I am aware this has not been given in the past and a precedent will not be set in this instance.
In the past permission has been given for the SBYC to allow camping during their regatta. This is the only event under which approval has been given and no other events at this time will be given approval for camping. Regards..."

SBYC has written again with an argument but does not want to jeopardize their regatta in the future so we won't be pushing too hard on this matter.

Sorry for the bad news everyone.

How to promote tourism, and enhance local business 101. If I did by chance have a business in the immediate location, I would certainly be calling on my local council member to voice my discontent at such a negative approach by the people concerned. This is a "NO COST" event that will have the flow on benefits to the local business, be it minor at this stage, but will grow I am sure.
Not a memeber of WSWA, or Safety Bay Windsurf club. However, "was" memeber Safety Bay Sailing club in the past. Not competing so no axe to grind there.
Wonder if another council down that way would like to have the patronage this was/is offering Very disappointing to read.

in case there any other numpty like me, please note the following to save wasting time:
- If you are a member of SBWC (or any other affiliate WWA member), you do not have to get WWA membership seperately
- Apparently you could race just 1 day (I am only doing Sunday)

Another question for the organiser - are safety equipment required? PFD or flares?

Anyway, for any intermediate sailors, please make an effort to join in. I know most people who race are elite level, but it would be good to have some company at the back!

Flares will not be necessary as we are racing off the beach under SBYC
PFD's however will be essential

Does anyone have a spare PFD they can lend me?

I do terry. I'll bring it.

Any ideas on where to stay. I was hoping to crash in the swag at the club as I don't fancy driving from Bunbury both days

I went today and had a great time!

The racing format meant every race after the first round was a tight contest with sailors of similar ability matched against each other.

Huge thanks to Stu for organising it. I hope it becomes a regular event on the WWA calendar.

For those wondering if they should have a go tomorrow, do it! Awesome fun.
