Had some bad news this afternoon that one of our WA local legends had past away yesterday in a motor vehicle accident down south near his home town of Cowaramup.
Owen was well known and liked around the Perth northern beaches when he lived up here before relocating down south to live the dream of a great watermans life.
I first met Owen many years ago when he was an apprentice electrician working on larger commercial projects. At this point he was only just learning to windsurf. It was amazing that a guy who had never sailed in his life to have the determination to get into the waves at Mettams within his first year of learning to sail, but he did it. He was a 'FREEK'. He had a big surfing back ground, and this helped him immensely.
I couldn't believe it when I heard that he had done his first forward within a few years of first stepping onto a sailboard.
He was a very talented sup surfer, and foil surfer aswell.
It certainly makes you think how precious and short life is when you hear that someone as full of life that this guy was is taken from the earth way too soon.
Thoughts and feelings go out to his wife Simone, and his children that are left shattered to go on with out him.

RIP Greenroom...

Owen was one of the first sailors I met when I moved to WA. He was pretty fresh sailing but he was totally into it with a lot of passion. I was instantly drawn to him for his enthusiasm . We sailed a fair few times back in the day and he was one I could always rely on in winter to be out in the storms. I remember talking to him about he was wanting to learn to forward, and I was trying to explain a few little progressive steps of the chop. Shortly after he posted a picture of full commitment rotation at mettams with his dreads flying in the wind. Legend. And charger, Will be missed.

I met Greenroom up in Perth about ten years ago, fond memories of him gently encouraging me WAY outside my comfort zone to wavesail outside the little island off Hillarys.

Since then we both ended up in the Margaret River region, he showed me some of his secret herring spots, and we'd wave at each other on the road about once a week. This pic was taken a few months ago when I took him and his son fishing out off Gracetown.

RIP dude, you'll be missed.
