Where - at the Kitejam Village. ie the grassy area adjacent to the road directly opposite 'the pond'

With huge numbers Kiteboarding and Windsurfing in the Pond, the council are convening meetings to discuss with users the best way to manage the area.

With 2 meetings down a new set of guidelines/rules for kiting and windsurfing in Safety Bay are well into the planning stages. WAKSA needs your feedback to existing proposals; as well as direct input for your ideas to be included; to what will soon be a finalised set of proposals for the DPI - Marine Safety to implement.

If you want a say in how things are to run at your 'local' in the future then NOW is the time. WAKSA will be presenting a full rundown of what has presented and proposed thus far. It is up to you guys as a local user group to guide the path forward from here. Options are narrowing as each party involved puts forward their considered concerns. A strong and reliable local kite voice is required. It was difficult to pull everything together for a meeting over the festive season but we have had only a few personal replies to out earlier calls. If you want your say it's rapidly becoming a matter of now or never.

So take note pls :- There will be a meeting of all Safety Bay/ Rockingham kiters at 11:00 am at the Kitejam Village (ie roadside opposite the pond).

You do NOT have to be a WAKSA member to be involved. Restrictions will apply to all, so all local or regula
r users of the Safety Bay &/or Shoalwater kite beaches are welcome to attend.

Windsurfers are definately being represented by SBWC Not all windsurfers will be in Lancelin on the 10th. Why would you want to comment on this dont you want windsurfers to know for some reason. This is not underhanded. the DPI council and other parties have all had meetings and have now come up with guidelines. All will be revealed soon

Thanks for the clarification & confirmation that there are windsurfers involved.

The reason I asked was the original article. It looks like kiters are being proactive in this and I coulnd't find any info on windsurfing news and websites.

Is there a possibility to post the proposals here or give a link?

WAKSA are going to give kiters the full rundown tomorrow anyway so no need for secrecy.

From WAKSA, the Western Australian Kiting Association

There is a meeting of interested parties to discuss; (I quote); "windsurfing & kitesurfing issues in the Rockingham area".

There will be reps from City of Rockingham; a whole swag of other relevant govt depts eg fisheries etc, windsurfing will be represented and the WAKSA president will be attending the meeting as a representative for kitesurfing.

It would be very valuable if we could have a local kiter to attend.

Any active local member from that area who can attend would be most welcome. Please forward your name & no. to president@waksa.org.au your call will be returned.

If you have info of value but can't attend WAKSA would also welcome receiving any documented background info etc which may help them represent our interests to the max.

Where is the West Australian Windsurfing Association's involvement and why are they not actively involved and notifying all WA windsurfers just like the WA Kiting Assoc. Also, why has the SBWC not notified anyone here previously, they need communication training one would think????

I would have loved to have known about this. I would have attended for sure along with a bunch of windsurfers I know. I know a few local residents that have nearly been wiped out by kites along the path that would have loved to attend also.

Kite surfers may have put up the msg they wanted people to attend but it was never the case. It was a meeting that you could attend by invite only. WWA were there as was DPI calm etc. Proposals are in the pipeline and will be disclosed as soon as approved.

So to sum up we don't want to get ahead of ourselves as it is only a 'proposal' you are coming up with i take it?
It will only be valid for a year or two anyway and then hopefully the sandbar will have reformed as it was approx. 15 years ago when there were 2 clear sides.

Hey Rad Lad, WWA were at the meeting as DJH says, but WWA cant go on the forum and give a half assed comment when the proposal is in the development stages, also as for trainining in communication let me remind you we are all volunteers who put in a lot of our own time communicating via the WWA web page and sms, so i hope next time you may re arange your comments to to be a little bit kinder to those committee members from WWA and SBWSC who are doing a good job. Feel free to contact any of us for information and when we know the final draft we will post it on our web page .

It seems there are some people out there who are not members of WWA or SBWC concerned about their favourite windsurfing spot being lost to the kitesurfers. For those who are members of our clubs I will let you know you are being extremely well represented.
Those of you who are not members of our clubs maybe you should look at how much you have invested in your windsurfing quiver and how much you like to sail at this spot and whether you want to lose it.
Our clubs are a bunch of like minded people who enjoy windsurfing whether it be casually or professionally. A club or association has a greater voice than an individual.
We challenge all of you who enjoy your sport to join WWA or SBWC, giving us more members, enabling us to have a greater say in the planning process.
Volunteers give up their time free of charge so everyone can enjoy windsurfing in safety.
You do nothing - you can expect nothing.
We will represent all club members.

Join and support these guyz like the SBWC and WWA, sniping from the sidelines is too easy

Hiya, decided to join the forum prompted by this very topic at the moment. I live local, havent been out on the board for over a year but recently have a good fang last week on a couple of days, hopefully be out this afternoon! Been windsurfing for about 20 years now, but as a recreational sailor only.

Reading comments on this topic Kites vs Windsurfers at SB and Lano on Seebreeze is obviously getting heated. Looking in from the outside and knowing nothing of the proposals being decided, I was hoping for some outline being posted here.

Hopefully some commonsense prevails and a compromise is equal to all water users - but safety is a primary issue. This is no different to when jetskis invaded riding areas to surf breaks being jumped at.

Observing from years gone past, west side of Turn Is. was the kite area, now they want the pond also on the east side too. Maybe the circle system may work around some buoys on the east side? It was pretty busy out there mixing it all together the other day. But the comment in the Lano post sums it up, nothings changed, it been like this before kites, especially in both areas 10 or more years back when windsurfing was more popular.

I do agree with joining clubs and associations, as I compete in motorcycling, and idiots continue to breaks rules and stuff it for others by riding motorbikes in illegal areas and give all motorcyclists a bad name. But rules and proposals should also be an open forum from the public also.

I might consider joining SBWSC, but I dont want to get distracted with another sport etc, as I am involved in others already, and basically cant afford to update gear at the moment, I know - windsurfing is addictive
