it's illegal to w/surf to rotto, that's why i would be happy in 15/20 knot breeze to give it a go.[seriously]

tips...use a newish mast especially, newish rope, base, ext etc and take water + flares just in case.

sail with someone, even safer in 3's and have to be competent level.

Why is it illegal?
Too many rescues?

I can't see that it is illegal. Can't think of any regulation that prevents you from windsurfing to rotto. Nothing says you can drive a boat or yacht over but are not allowed to windsurf or kitesurf to there.

The only thing is same as a yacht you have to have certain safety gear once offshore..... and if you were going to sail over you'd just have to comply with that. Flare, life jacket, etc.

If I recall correctly, there was a race from Scarborough to Rottnest and back quite a few years back and I recall the winner managed the crossing there and back again in 45-47 minutes or so.

Can anyone else remember all the details?

Recently did my skippers ticket and tried to clarify why a windsurfer could not go offshore to rotto i originally thought it was due to the shipping channel but..

Technically a vessel less than 3.7m in length can not legally travel more than 5nm offshore even with all necessary safety gear.

This would rule out a windsurfer including an rsx or a mistral one design

One thing im not technically sure about is that the waters inside rottnest island are classified as inshore protected waters and there is a exemption for epirbs within a 5nm radius of the zone.

but who is goin to catch you on slalom gear/wave gear in 25knots of wind and km's of coastline to check in. Unless they get one of those super ferries to chase you you, well then you're stuffed

To comply with regulations you would need to carry flares ,life jacket ,marine radio, epirb and this is the killer an anchor with rope and chain ,I have done the crossing several times in the malibu rum rotto and return race it took me about 1 hr and 10 mins the fastest time from memory was 44 mins by Anders Brignal .Do not risk your life by crossing without a back up boat following you in case of gear failure or conditions changing i.e offshore wind or just getting worn out . my 2 bobs worth

from my understanding it is quite a job to set up rescue required every 1500 meters or so permission required to race with out your anchor and radio etc.

Thought Australia was a free country,
If you want to do it, and you think your've got the skills. Grab a mate, wait for the right forecast and go do it..
Obviously, 2 smoke flares and a Life jacket would be a smart move..

WAKSA are holding a Lighthouse to Lieghton in December. I reckon we should just rock up and join them
Personally I reckon it should be done in the other direction. Mainland to island.

I did the rotto race [the quokka classic ] back in the 80s on a mistral Malibu a short race board going over was no prob but coming back was hairy eg tail walking a 3 and half mt board down monster swells in south passage , that memory is still etched in my head I did it in 43 min and was 16th and was no were near the front I recon it was something in side 30 min for the fast guys . As for going over in stelth mode the ferrys will tip you in to the cops and they will get you at Rotto or worse back at your car !

The biggest concern I would have would be reaching Phillip Rock and running out of wind!
