G'day all!
I am moving to WA from SA and am hoping to get some local advice on where to sail in Freo! I am still learning but am keen to get out as much as possible
I won't have a car for a while, which will make it difficult I know, but where there's a will there's a way!!

Any advice is good advice!!

Bit hard without a car, but I think the train stops at Port and Leighton beaches. The Mosman Park stop isn't far from The Dutch Inn.

If your still learning, ocean beaches may not be ideal in Winter storms, but in summer they'll be fine.

Point Walter is probably the closest river spot, but not sure how you'd get there without a car.

Get a house in Safety bay Rockingham and you could walk across the road to a nice sailing spot!

Where in Freo are you?

South Beach is good for a sail, can get choppy and not the best if you are still getting to grips with water starting.

Launch near the pickled fig and when you have a car park in this area to. The car park further south always and I mean always has break in problem.

I will be staying in East Freo near the Canning and Stiriling Highways I believe!
I can water start no probs but am in the process of learning to gybe...some tell me that doing forwards is easier! Maybe I should focus my energy into learning them as I am proficient at the catapult part!!

If you are near canning and stirling hwy then Applecross/Melville foreshore on the river is the closest sailing spot. When you drive down canning hwy turn left near the cricket field after second wind and you will find where everyone sails

Good flat water spot to learn to gybe.

Yep. Typically not quite as flat as Melville but slightly steadier wind in summer seabreeze (SW). Also works in the mornings with an easterly. Alas the grass is not quite as lush but it looks like they have put new irrigation in so fingers crossed.

Like others have said.
If you are staying south of the river:
- Point walter (on river and flat)
- Melville (on river bit further up nice and flat)
- south beach (on the ocean can get pretty choppy)
- woodman's point (further down the coast around coogee way)

North of the river: i dont know alot
- pelican point (nearly opposite Melville beach on the river)
- Dutchies (just up from leighton beach on the ocean bit of a break)
- Leighton beach itself just at the new flats being built is also pretty nice, no breaks though.
