Every now and then, I see folks left their gear behind. It must be rather inconvenient to have left even the least expensive bit of gear behind.

I have worked out a simple system to ensure that my essential windsurfing components are not to be left behind. Here is how it works...

I use a numbering system.

Rigged up sail
1. Mast
2. Boom
3. Sail
4. Mast-foot + (Mast sleeve)

Board
5. Board

Accessories
6. Harness
7. Wetsuit
8. Sun glasses
9. Sailing gloves

If you do a careful roll-call before shutting the car doors, you will be fine for the next trip

What about the bit of gear you leave where you rigged your sail the come back 10 min later and it's vanished without trace..will it show up on someone else's manifest?

It will show up as a double-count on the thief's list Throughout my years of windsurfing, I have only known of a case where rigged up sail was stolen in broad daylight ! The sail and the carbon boom were brand new. The owner got complacent and left it unattended while having lunch.

Windsurfers in general are very community minded and honest. I often wonder why some folks left their full array of expensive equipment at the back of their utes. Easy picking in my opinion. Yet, I have not heard of "involuntary extraction". The rare acts of theft probably were carried out by some drug addicts looking for easy cash.

For me, I lock up my wagon while on the water. Anyway, my equipment is not worth pinching as they are mostly secondhand and patched up with sticky duct tapes all over !

Not that bad at all and I doubt that would happen in Perth. My NP mast extension was used to downhaul a sail and left in the middle of the paddock at Peli Pt so no doubt picked up by mistaken identity...

Wish I had used it. Would have saved me the cost of a new boom, altho maybe the honest and upstanding person who mistakenly picked it up at Cottesloe on Jan 2nd will return it??... then I'll have 2 number 2's on your list.

Years ago, to my disgust, I left my mast at home after driving 300 km to Esperance ! Yes, that was before the two-piece mast era. The excitements got the better of me.

Sailing gloves, haven't seen those in a while.

Not many people wear them. Same with neoprene boots. I found that by wearing them, the skin on my fingers did not wear out after a long session. This is especially true at the beginning of a sailing season. My hands got soft as I was a desk-bound IT nerd.
