Howdy all!

I live just south of Rockingham and I am looking to get started in windsurfing (i know, near impossible these days).

Looking for any advice, direction to find lessons or 1:1 training or anything windsurfing down this way.

I am aware of the lessons in the swan river on a sat or sun morning, but its quite the trek.

Should I buy some second hand gear and try to teach myself?

Ideally id like to go with someone else, get some pointers, pay them etc and get started

Hi Dan, I taught myself from books last century, and that turned out OK.

The danger in buying 2nd hand stuff is you can pay too much for unsuitable stuff.

A rank beginner, needs a big stable floaty board. and a small to medium sized sail.

There's plenty of advise available on this website, and at the beach if you ask the right questions.

Tell us a bit about yourself, age, fitness, weight, budget, and people will come back with advice about suitable equipment.

At the moment, it's not a good time to start learning here, wind is usually gusty and up and down.
Not impossible if you are raring to go, but don't expect it to be easy or quick.
Early seabreezes aren't too strong and fairly steady, gives you a much better chance of learning the first steps quickly. Then you can progress as the wind gets stronger.

Hey Dan, you might want to join the Safety Bay Windsurfing Club! We organise lessons and have all the beginner gear so that you don't have to buy it. Our qualified instructors would be more than happy to take you on this journey!

Learning is also much more fun when sharing the water with other members.

If you're super keen, we might be able to organise a winter session or otherwise it's probably better to wait until the season kicks off.
