Depending on what you are doing, it's often better to have them larger and gaining the traction by using your toes rather than having them tight and 'wedging' your feet in the straps; this particularly applies for waves/freestyle imo.
CJW is spot on. I am currently recovering from a broken foot (Lisfranc fracture and dislocation) from having my foot strap tight. Keep them loose Dman!!
