I had my car broken into at Pinneroo yesterday and so did another windsurfer. There were plenty of people down there so these kids/addicts must not be too worried about people being around. Usually I am very cautious as to what I leave in but with it being so busy, I had lapsed.

They did take my first aid kit ! Hopefully there is karma in there somewhere as to what they will need.

Always frustrating to hear of this NR.

Unless we want to dictated to by these worthless parasites about where we can and can't sail with peace of mind the only other option is to be proactive about the security of your vehicle.

I have a number of deterrents fitted to my van depending on where i leave it, some are visible and some are not but this is turned on every time i go sailing.

Relatively cheap and simple to install, and i know it works because if i forget to mute it when opening the car it gives me fright to say the least.

Safe to assume for the most part it is the opportunistic loooooooooooser type we are dealing with here and a simple mind needs nothing more than a simple obstacle to reassess its intention.

Every fin is over $200, and there are always 4-5 left in the car not to mention any spare boards and sails.

There are a few suspect characters often parked in the last parking slot, but cannot just accuse someone because they "look suspicious".

Stump, that alarm is interesting.

However, that's not a car alarm by default. How did you fit it in?

Any reports of it going off on it's own?

Why not? Ring the cops cos he looks suspicious they will soon ascertain if he has a record for breaking into cars and if so then they attend.
They may just roll up as he is doing over a car. Tiny chance but better than the zero chance if nobody rings.

True, however its not the car i,m trying to protect.
The vehicle is insured and is fitted with its own tracking device and mechanical means of immobilisation.

Sure you could argue that by virtue of the car being stolen then so is my uninsured windsurfing kit but as i said i don,t think its car thieves we are dealing with.

It has a base bracket that simply screws into/onto anything you don't mind drilling a hole into.
The key fob is fitted somewhere inconspicuous, one press-15 second delay and its armed, open the door and it will sound one beep to signal it is about to go off, press the fob again to disarm.

Any relative movement past the infrared sensor triggers it.

I have managed after some trial and error to position it in such a way that any movement in the front or rear of the vehicle will set it off and it is very sensitive,
The movement does not have to be a person.

The nose of a board slipping out the back hatch or a hand rifeling around in your glove box, doesn't matter.
Not that I've tested it but I'm pretty sure that shattered glass would set if off swell.

Just don,t point it at any windows as anyone walking past will trigger it, this particular model is designed to be mounted on the roof or on the floor.

I have never had it go off unintentionally that i know of, don't leave the window cracked open or with one of those silly dancing solar flower pots!

I had it for a couple of years protecting my motorbike before i realised that my my expenditure on windsurfing kit had surpassed the cost of my insured motorcycle, i got it from a motorcycle store but i,m sure a quick search on the net would track one down, there are several models.
About $180 from memory.
When it goes off the last thing a fumbling meth freak is going to worry about is trying to turn it off!

$75 delivered to your door, nothing is a sure fire solution but for that price it,s a pretty good start.

May also come with a sticker that you can put on the window to help prevent the window being smashed.

Some say that few people take notice of car alarms these days, but if it gets just a sideways look from someone then as Mark said you have increased the chances of not only preventing your gear being stolen but also possibly getting it back if it is taken.

Would appear that pinnaroo has a few people around (never sailed there) so if you all keep an eye an ear open for the crew you sail with then you will have created the most effective deterrent of all.

135 decibels feels more like a tiny pricking sensation on the ear drum which i would imagine might be more akin to you sticking it in ones ear hole longwinded!
