still isn't organised... don't think any state has even put their hand up to run it?

pretty sure it is supposed to be either SA's or QLD's turn but i guess if they don't do it then other states could go for it?

QLD - ?
SA - ?
NSW - had the last one, possibly organised enough to do it again if everything else falls through?
VIC - not organised enough for 2012, possibly could host nationals in 2013...
TAS - don't think there is anyone down there motivated to run an event that big.
WA - heaps of events already and consistent conditions - could pull it off if everyone else can't get their act together?

not much time until the titles are typically held - Jan/Feb but I guess they could be pushed back to Spring/Early summer season next year?

Definitely isn't a good thing for the sport if we don't have a 2012 Australian titles... They are always a lot of fun, meeting fellow wavesailors from across the country and hopefully scoring fun conditions.

From an Windsurfing SA perspective I dont think we are in a position to run it.
So you might as well count us as a no.

Its been hard to find committee members and everyone is keen to compete go sailing but not so keen to help organise which we al can relate to - a few of us try and run some events and evryone appreciates a few beers and bbq afterwards

this winters wave state comp was a fizzer unfortunately as we just didnt get forecasts that we could call the titles - and the trophies finally arrived last week!!!! Great on line service that was (Ordered in June) .

Saying that the South East (Robe to Port MAc) or west coast (Elliston way) would great late January options as there is F all local waves during summer with cross off conditions.

Cheers

If no one wants to organise it why not see if the organises of the Ledge to Lencelin weekend wave comp would consider turning this state round into the national comp.
The existing event has a huge turn out with media coverage and all facilities are already in place, just a suggestion.

Can somebody organise a Freestyle Nationals? Ta.

Also if anybody runs a wave nationals, and there is some wind, can we have jumps given the credit they deserve?

great suggestion - except i hate south passage. lots of crew like it for some reason though - to be fair it does have its days... i would love to see a nats run up north - that would be win win for everyone -as the jumps and the rides are so sick- maybe just before easter .... could be run in house by the crew up there.

haha... well I ran it past our local crew and the response was essentially way too hard etc... I would like to have one in Vic though - I think the last one we had was about 10 years ago, just not going to happen in 2012.

piggy backing it on to the Lancelin event couldn't be too difficult?

There's already a wave comp at Lanno the same weekend as the marathon, I was just thinking of changing the name of the wave comp and calling it the nationals so it may give one talented wavesailer the bragging rights of being national champ instead of the title going to waste. It's mid season, close to Perth, good camping options, local pubs, shops, and huge post comp parties.
In the recent past Col from Birdseyeview.com has arranged a chopper for both events and attracts a few top international sailers, heard Dunkerbeck was there last year.

Why can't the Lano wave comp be the Nationals? Best Aus sailor is the national champ. Easy

Ok time to make a call. people from interstate will have to get time off work, arrange travel and accomaation for those who want to compete in the nationals.
Who makes the final call??

Hello,
Guys, freestyle is great, technical bla bla bla, but find judges for it is a pain because nobody understand or knows the moves anyway. So to organise it, forget it. Jumping is easier but could be tricky as well sometime, you can't compare jumping to waveriding, it is 2 different thing, with 2 different scoring or marquing scale and range. The importnt thing is to be clear about this at skippers meeting.

hey guys,

i've just got back from a long time overseas and am itching to get a currumbin alley Gold Coast - QLD) comp up and running in the next year (was thinking feb/march).

i'd be super keen on organising the nationals and i know adam quinn from fanatic/north would be keen on supporting this.

also some brisbane shops would probably throw in too.

we get awesome (albeit not that consistent) conditions in spring with the swells starting to rise and the south east trade winds. we had an EPIC comp here back in 2009 with mast high + and 20-25 knots for the 2009 currumbin classic.

a few questions though - in terms of insurance and stuff for an 'organised event' what would be the process?

i'd be happy to get the comp up and running though and am sure i could get some backing. there's also a local crew in QLd of good wavesailors and for those who have sailed currumbin, even on a small day, know how good it can get.

so i guess it would involve letting the council know as it's a pretty buys spot at times, and also the insurance.

here's a very shaky vid i made from that epic 2009 comp...

al, send me a private message and let's get the ball rolling.

Did anyone else see the "Blue Moon" eclipse in that vid towards the end or did i just imagine it?

I'm really liking the idea of having the nationals tag on to the Lancelin Classic, think it could be a really good thing. TV footage, parties, big names competeing, sponsors and wavesailors would really benefit.

It sounds like people would be stoked on Currumbin, wicked!

I've had a talk to a few people last night and the issue at the moment would be getting permission to use the Alley. The Alley is the best down the line spot. We COULD get permission for the backbeach, between the alley and the surf club, but this is a beach break and not as good.

We are going to try and get the Alley but it will take a few talks with a few people.

It would seem feasable to run an expression session style comp with no official heats, and running this off the back beach with people floating down for an 'expression session' at the alley. That's one way we could get around this. Hopefully permission would be granted, but option 1 would be the back beach.

The second option could be venturing over the border to Fingal Heads, a good curved bay whihc also pumps in the south East trades. The problem with this is a) it's not in QLD and b) I haven't spoken to NSW wavesailing about this yet.

So thus far the movement is to get talking with Tweed Council in regards to holding it at the Alley, but after a few talks with a few friends down there, this could prove hard.

Should be more detail early next week.

Chris Powell

LATE EDIT: As the 'expression session' style comp theoretically could be feasible at Currumbin Alley, it wouldn't be as good as a heat style comp with heats, semi's and a final. Hence why we're trying to organise somewhere where this would be viable.

You cant have a nationals decided by expression session results, it needs to be run as a real comp. Man on man heats, not a free for all.

Exactly.

So if Currumbin Alley isn't viable (through council agreement) then it could be the back beach at currumbin or over the border in Fingal OR Flat Rock, a good place further south just beyond Lennox Head (works a very nice reef break in South East trades)

Chris give me a call at some stage and I will let you in on the issues in trying to run a comp on the Goldy before you go much further. It's certainly not easy.

Hi Mucksy, re the insurance we probably have a few options for you but would have to act quickly. There was a Wavesailing club in qld a few years ago but unfortunately no one got behind the organizer so he closed it down. The clubs only really work if people join them. There may be an opportunity to reinstate it and overcome a lot of the paperwork or we could hook you up with one of the existing clubs if they were keen.

Give me a call if you want to discuss the options further. Details on WQ website
