For myself (18 months into wave sailing as a middleish aged guy) this stuff is exciting. My bottom turns are weak, so it's a lot easier to commit in front of a less than head-high wave than something larger (I have managed a few overhead waves...I've also paid some dues on same.)

Small waves are fun for experienced crew to ............for it is the small waves that build you for the BIG WAVES.

Small waves can cop an extra slashing with out the swim.
YOUR FITNESS can often be the difference between getting to your rig and getting out of the danger zone ,or not worrying about copping a another one on the head.

Are you taxed YET in the USA over there for the size of the waves you ride ?
The word is your next Government is going to introduce it to recoup all the money lost by those ripp off share market and bank crew.?

Well we just spent 8 years spending money we didn't have (and now must repay to China) with a fake conservative running the country. The next president will be raising taxes, whoever gets elected.

You got the first bit right, but not really sure if I would call it a four foot wave! Maybe 2 foot??

Americans do call the wave size from the front not the rear as we do here, bigger and better as always!

maybe rephrase it as knee high chop can be fun!

I think you'll find that American surfers call it from behind the wave (height vs predominant sea level) while American windsurfers call it from the foot of the wave to the crest.

Do I understand it that when an Australian windsurfer says he was on a mast-high wave, he or she means that while bottom turning on that wave the crest was 30 feet above the board?

yeah but most Aussies confuse mast high with double mast high! eg any wave at Currumbin always seems to be mast high! Local joke

When talking to people that don't surf, including windsurfers, I always talk about the wave face compared to something. Either waist high, shoulder high, over head, mast high etc. Save's confusion.

1. When telling someone who wasn't there, say it was twice as big as what you think.

2. When telling someone who was there, say it was half the size as what you think.

In that case, Gerroa was double waist high from mid-arvo onwards.

Double waist pffft, I reckon it was at least logo high.

I was planing the whole time til you packed up. Maybe it was just that extra fin in your board that was holding you back.

Your comment did remind me of kiters calling windsurfers "non-progressive", but I won't actually call you a kiter. I know your handle passes are still quite ordinary.

and CJW, I only recall mast high waves too. I could see my car every time I did double forwards off the lip.
I also invented a new move called the Crows Nest. thats when you ride the wave while standing on the tip of your mast.

Yep, listening to people talk about wave height is often good for a laugh. If it's really waisthigh they say it's one foot; headhigh is called two or three feet, then when it gets a few feet bigger than that suddenly the exaggeration flips direction and they're calling it logo high.
