I sailed in the late morning form 11:00 - until about 1:00pm. Had a 4.7 and 69litre wave board. A local said there was a Bronze Whaler cruising around One Mile Beach and it planted a seed in my mind. The dolphins I saw i thought were sharks, the shadow of my sail i though was a shark, even the black patches in the break looked like schools of sharks.

Even so - i found it hard to sail, Quite gusty and short waves spilling all over the place. I kept thinking that it must be better for wave sailing if I can get in the right spot. There was a considerable rip current messing around with the waves as well.

I may try again on Friday but it was so lonely!!. Except for the Korean tourists who kept wanting their picture taken with "Aussie Surfing star".

Is there a secret to sailing Birubi well?

Glovey and I must have just missed you.
we rigged on the grassed area behind the caravan park (near the boat launching entry and the play equipment & bbq)
We hit the water just after 1pm so you must have been pulling out of the carpark as we were heading onto the beach.

We waited till the tide started to fill in a bit which cuts down on some of the wash/drag action.
It also tends to produce a little more swell.
High tide was at 2 pm

By the time we finished up and got out of the water (about 3pm) it was getting solid and after a wash cycle in the break zone i was hanging out on the inside while Glovey pulled into some over head biggens out the back.

It was pretty gusty today going from nuclear back to 20 knots.
Heading down the beach towards where the 4wd tourist buses drive in seems to produce cleaner air and the waves can be a little better.
With so much water and a new swell on the build it was pretty shifty (peaks moving around a heap)
Again this tends to get better (has less of an affect) on a higher tide.

I think first thing this morning might have been the pick as shown in the picture (taken around 7.15am)

Pretty sure Glovey will be sailing it again tomorrow but I have to head to the big smoke bloody work !

Troppo (and Tim): there were no finned friends yesterday because I was No.2
I wouldn't worry too much about Kevin's Subject title and all the sightings in the media because in the 20 years I've been sailing there I've only seen two sharks (though that's one more than I've seen at any other beach) and one was only a little fella.

Tim: are you saying you sailed today (Thursday) rather than Wednesday? We sailed from about 2pm Wed. (And Kevin sailed today too, just so no-one gets confused.)

I don't think there's a secret to sailing Birubi well. I know what you mean about the waves, but they vary every time you sail. We tend to sail from straight in front of the clubhouse to about 100m up the beach. If it's very small there's a bank a few more hundred metres along the beach (watch for the wreck there at low tide).

even when it's nearly lake-like at SE facing beaches, Birubi will generally be waist high or bigger.

Some locals have started rigging at the next beach east (imagine north if you're a dummy ). It doesn't have the view, but has better parking/rigging, and avoids the longest stretch of speed bumps in the "civilized" world It's only 100m around the rocks, but a few kms to drive there from the clubhouse.

Swell was bigger today and the wind way stronger... but a lot more water moving around.
No men in the grey suits spotted today !
Tomorrow (Friday) could be the go once the swell has lined itself up a bit better.
Hope all is OK and you can get out there and bag a few for me - waves not grey suits that is

That's strange, cos judging from your SUP pic in your avatar, you're regular stance so starboard tack should be easier. I'm also regular stance and looking at that spot makes me envious!

Port tack wave riding is like writing with your left hand - you get better with practice but it never feels really natural.

Anyone sailing at Birubi 2morrow[monday]? Thinking of heading up in the morning.

Would be good to catch up as its been a long time in between drinks.
Sadly I am off to the big smoke tomorrow and I think Glovey will still be in Melbourne... so you might have it all to your self.

Pretty flat at present and the predicted Sunday arvo nor easter hasn't gotten over 12 knots at the moment.
Guaranteed to be windy tomorrow as I can't get in the water
Swell is predicted to lift a little.

Hope you get some wind & waves and will be keen to hear how your new kit goes.
