I have always played by the rules posted on the gnaraloo toilets as they seem fairest
"first on the swell has the wave, either upwind or downwind"
"lose the swell, go back out and find another one"
" Don't tack /Gybe onto another persons swell "

Anyway, sailing the other day a very well known pro blatantly tacks upwind (about 20m) onto my wave and all of a sudden it looks like I dropped in on him so I pull off.

Is that the actual rule, understand if both sailing in at same time upwind guy has right of way.

I often found in these situations karma can be a real bitch. If you are consistently an asshole it eventually comes back to bite you in the arse.

You have done the right thing taking the high road... later go into the car park and buy everyone a beer bar the idiots that dropped in on you. Instant karma.

assuming this was at Sunset in Geraldton, competent sailors do this all the time, nothing wrong with sitting up wind even if the other sailor has right of way, when the coast is clear or you fall of the back (sounds like you did) a good wave doesn't go to waste..
Im sure if you didn't fall of the back or jibed (whatever you did) he would have stayed well clear and would have let you have your fun.

can't really compare sunset and gnaraloo, different setup.

just sharing my experience when sailing with some of the rippers up here.

yeah Matt, Coast definitely not clear, didn't fall off the back, rode downwind of him right to the moment he bottom turned than gybed off. Heaps of waves to choose from, 4 people on the water, do you "competent " sailors turn off the wave if us non competent sailors happen to catch the wave.

I don't remember any incident where I took a wave or dropped in on anyone but if it was me I'm sorry.

Sunset is a tricky wave to set-up for as you have the upwind peak, a fat middle section and the end-bowl close-out. Very often do people get upwind enough to be in the right position for the 1st peak. Occasionally I'll sneak on to this section of the wave even if someone is downwind of me but only if I know I'm not going to interfere with them or ruin their wave. If someone was only 20m away from me I definitely wouldn't do this, so in this instance I mustn't have seen you.

don't blame Ben Severne he is the friendliest wavesailor I know. Never sits upwind waiting for us uncompetants to fall off :)

Most really good sailors are cheeky and try to steal your waves, just call them off and they will bugger off, or you can just have a party wave and know there not going to kook it and run you over.

That situation is only a drop in if the upwind guy expects you to get off the wave. Just stay on the wave and do your thing. The second guy just needs to stay out of your way. Whatever you do don't try to cut upwind and make a point of trying to stake your claim on the wave because that will just ruin it for both riders.

I had Marcilio Browne tacking into a wave just like that on Ho' last winter. Only a handful of sailors were out, since it was in early Jan.

It was my first time out at Ho' after having dreamed of sailing there for some 25 years, and the best wave of the day for that I had worked quite a bit to position myself on. You could, considering time, cost and effort to put myself on that wave on that very day, call it my 10,000 dollar wave.

Still, I gave it to him thinking that "he is most likely able to do something good with this one". And he sure did, threw a big goiter right in front of me when I was coming in on the wave after which was a fair bit smaller. A sight to remember. I gave him a big smile and a shaka going in.

I'm pretty sure that if I had stayed on it, he would've given me room to share. Even if I was a bit surprised to have him tack into a wave that I was on quite a bit earlier, I had no issue to see what the newly crowned champ could do with it.

Now, I was to write about Kanaha and the kiters... well, let's just say that it is another story.

Ha Ha , been waiting for the KING to chime in with his words of wisdom. Here's my theory, I reckon Jaeg's didn't see me, him and other elite sailors are so focussed on their "job" and they have no reason to have a look around at us mortals doing boring mortal stuff, whereas us regular sailors always know where they are as they are always doin something cool. But if they deliberately snake you (MATT WA) for instance (gnaraloo 3 yrs ago) if it's the Matt i'm thinking it is, dogging out underpowered upwind and dropping into every ones waves than that's a different story.

P.S when jaegars name came up I emailed Laurie to delete the thread as I think he is a great guy and ambassador for our sport , but he asked if it can stay as it poses an interesting question. I've sailed with Jaegar maybe 100 times and never had a drama with him or virtually any of the local gero crew. Only time I've had dramas has been when some non local aussies or overseas guys tack upwind and take the waves, which is why I asked the question as many euro's believe the one upwind at any time has right of way, and I wasn't really sure, but now with the King's approval I know what to do.
We travelled with a German guy (even lent him a 4wd) and he saw it as completely normal to tack upwind at gnaraloo and take our's (and many other) people's waves.
Don't want to get started on the kiters who did the same thing

being from Vicco , I feel your pain ! Having sailed Gnarraloo a bit and have people drop in on a constant basis is quite the p!$s off ,if you don't know who's who and who to associate with , firstly respect earns respect thats a not hard to work out .I once had the windsurfing god gybe on a wave upwind from me at diamond head and I thought you are fkn kidding RN is dropping in on me ,so I looked at him and he just looked at me and said its all yours I'll follow you (top bloke to sail with) .so no matter how pro you are short tacking sucks and pressures normal sailors in to making presure mistakes that they wouldn't normally do ,the one I like to do is if the do it once maybe a judgment era second time you try it ,give it the straight hander and get them in the white water and the shore break ( if your lucky)I find they don't do it again in a hurry
also don't start on the kiteboarders at Gnarraloo the ultimate short tackers ,you know they can't swim that's why they're scared to go out 1k to pick up a wave of there own , but then there are a lot of town sailors who come down to my local on a windy weekend and pull the gybe up wind and say I was up wind so it's my wave ( jerks)
all these thoughs and only 20 faces to choose from take your pick

You forgot to mention kiters throwing turns in front of people charging in on set waves and kiting out through the line up upwind and through the take zone with people riding waves under around and through strings as you charge out with the potential of the kiter to float down wind on top of some one wave riding

Good manners and a basic understanding of how a line up works giving clear air and waves to each other should be worshiped

Nothing wrong with worshiping great moves and radical wave riding to windsurfing or kiting
