I have caught the SUP bug and just bought a new 2013 Fanatic Allwave 9"6. It has a spot for connecting sail so I am keen to get it out in light winds on some little waves (I have no wave sailing experience and am a pretty much a beginner windsurfer, ie I haven't mastered gybe turn yet). Just wondering if anyone has any tips for what I am wanting to attempt it would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 5.4 and 6.1,Neil Pryde Fusion sails that I could use. As the SUP has no foot straps should I use a harness? Do I use the same fin set up as purchased with? Centre fin is 5.8" and sides are 5" I think. It will be interesting to see the floatations of board once I add sail rig, I am about 78 kg. wish me luck

Hi skipd. Sup sailing is a great way to get into the waves and get your skills up. At your weight you will be fine with floatation. It wil be very stable. It's more stable then paddeling due to the stable pull you get from the sail.

As far as a harness it really depends on how much wind there is. I alway sail with a harness even if it super light. Just a habit thing I guess. but my brother often does not wear one when its light. I recommend wearing one to get used to unhooking as you take off on a wave but each to there own.

Both your sails will work fine on it. I mostly run my 62 and 5.3 on mine. As far as fin set up I have smaller aftermarket fins on my sup which I don't bother to swap out because its to much effort and its fine. You just adjust acordanly. My brother has a bigger middle fin he puts in sometimes which he says it helps to go up wind and drive through the turns. you can push off the fin more. but often I see him forgetting to change it as the fins he uses to sup with work just fine.

The best thing about sup sailing is that you get out in clean waves to yourself. And it's super fun.its never going to be as good as wavesailing on a short board but it shore beats waiting on the beach for the wind. It's has got me out sailing about double the amount of time.

I have been SUP sailing for a while and just use a smallish sale eg 4.7 - 5.4 and have found it a great way to improve gybing and tacking skills. In fact you can learn all sorts of moves you may not be able to on a normal short board. Yes use a harness as you can even get the board planing (sort of) If you want to get it up wind just get both feet out on the rail there's no need to change fins.

Took the SUP out for a sail the other day. It was ok, not much wind to really test it out. It would be good for someone really learning as it is very stable and seems to point upwind pretty good. Have to wait for some more wind to give it a good test.. Loving the supping though, soooo many people doing it in Perth, it's madness on the weekend near Cott. Can't wait to get to some decent waves without the crowds.
