Amazingly it's only four weeks until the New South Wales Wavesailing Association 2010/11 Series opener! It's time to dust off the sails and boards and head to the Illawarra for the 11th/12th September. This is always a great event, a time to catch up with fellow sailors, meet new people and generally share the stoke that a new season of NE'rs is just around the corner.

The competiton will be held at Port Kembla for a Westerly, Windang for a Southerly and Gerroa for a NE'r. Details of the sign on location will be posted in Seabreeze so please keep an eye out for updates.

Finally, the BBQ location will be in Gerroa so it would be worthwhile organising accommodation there and not further north.

If you want to do the whole season please help our treasurer by pre-paying via the forms found at www.nswwavesailing.org.

Lets hope for some decent swell and good winds.

The Association has a number of new faces who are all extremely committed to making this the best season yet - smooth running, fun, competitive and with the biggest turnouts.

anny sugestions of a cheap place to stay close enough to the 3 spots? also are those 3 beaches fine for a noobie wave sailor?

all "three beaches" are perfect for wave sailing beginners... the choice spot for getting into wavesailing is Gerroa though. We did have a few really big days lately but there never seem to be any waves at NSW Wavesailing comps anyway so don't worry too much.

That said, especially Windang can get heavy but when it gets to big for you just watch the pros do their thing.

RE accommodation, this really depends on wether you will be coming down with other people or if you are by yourself.

If you are coming with your family/ friends try the following options:

- Seven Mile beach park has cheapish cabins
- Stayz.com.au sometimes can have some inexpensive options
- try any of the Realestate agents in Gerringong, they have a number of holiday lets for both Gerringong and Gerroa on their books.

nick0 - best bet would be to find somewhere in Gerroa as that's where the BBQ/prize giving will be. The social/BBQ is the highlight of the weekend for me! PM me if you need a place to crash as we may have some spare space in the house for one person (not a family).

stehsegler, tend to agree with your comment - we haven't had the best run recently with waves but luckily it's been windy. Did you get to the Woopi comp? That was fairly big!

I think the last time we had waves over waist high for a comp at gerroa was in the early 0's!! The Sunday freesail at the teams event was good, head high and real light. Perfect for the sludger

yeah... you should have been down here on the 13th and 17th... especially the 13th was pretty scary. Turns out there is another bomby about 1000 meters offshore. It only works when it's 8 foot plus. I think it must have been about double mast on the 13th. A bit hairy to get out there along or jetski / boat backup. In a westerly it's a case of bye bye Australia... New Zealand here I come if something goes wrong.

In regards to wind the last three weeks have been pretty consistent as well... we even had a few NEer already... including a freak NEer with about 15 knts today.

Hi all,
Given the appearance of a couple of early NE's this season we may end up having the comp at Gerroa (hopefully with waves - ankle high for me please!)

BBQ night will be in Gerroa anyway. I will have the mobile on if you get stuck but everything will be confirmed on the Thursday evening on Seabreeze as to where Rego will be.

Please come early - we need to get everyone seeded, judging sheets written up and late registrations squared away. if it at all looks contestable i'm sure the judges will want to start as soon as possible.

Also, looks like we will have quite a few goodies to sample from Sam at WindSurfnSnow.

I still have the Windsurfing Movie II in my head so keen to hit the water.

Not trying to throw a spanner in the works but I believe Warilla/Corrimal gets the same if not more wind in early and late season North Easterlies. Up until October, than the end of February on.

Last year the guys drove past big North East Swell at Warilla, mast high surf and 20knots (at lunch time) to sail waist high 12knots at Gerroa. It's a pity that the option of Warilla was not even looked at as it would have been an epic event. I heard that Gerroa was fun but it was seriously awesome at Warilla on that day.

Just trying to bring attention to other spots that are sometimes better than Gerroa in a North Easter as well as being right there.

Hope to see everyone there this year, I should be there depending on work. I will be sailing Warilla though if we get similar conditions to last year.

Crash, Warilla beach is on the south side of Windang Island.

I've only seen it break on a south swell with ne wind. Haven't seen it line up like that though. Look sick if you had a boat or ski for backup.

it was blowing about 20 to 25 knts at the bomby. inside was nothing to 15 knts... with big rollers coming in. the only way to get out and come back in would have been by Jet Ski...

You mean the "Port Kembla" comp based at Gerroa?

I've sailed Port in westerlies in summer as well. You could call all the Gerroa comps "Port Kembla" comps.

Yes, agree that Port K is a new spot for a comp and thats good to see, but it's only there to cover another wind direction, not as an alternative NE sailing spot. That was the point.

You know how frustrating it is when a comp is held in 2 inch surf, even though we'd be told that Warilla is head high and 20 knots at that very moment.
Everyone drives up to Windang if there's a chance of southerly, so whats the difference?

Not bagging the current committee as I'm not involved, but simply telling it as I saw it every year.

I always thought it was a fear of ditching Gerroa. But it wouldn't be ditching it at all. Simply picking the best spot on the day.

Average Gong NE forecast in summer is 20kts. 99.5% of the time it will do exactly that, sometimes more. (unless there is a storm or stinking hot heat trough)
Wind will kick in by lunchtime nearly every time.

Base a comp up that way.
Get a Gerroa surf check from Waz in the morning.
No surf there? Wait for wind in Gong.
Wind doesn't kick in by early/mid arvo, go to Gerroa or Heads.

well, that's how most comps overseas are run...

that said, mid early/ mid arvo is too late for the heads. In my experience the conditions are generally best between 12noon and 3pm at the heads. After that the wind just gets too gusty unless it's really blowing a gale... in which case the Gong would be windy as well.

perhaps a good solution for the "where are the waves" dilemma would be for people to call in the conditions at PortK, Warrilla, the Heads (although there is a cam), Gerroa in the morning. That way the committee can make a judgement as to where to run the comp???

It amazes me that every year, every comp and even every posting relating to the NSWWA we always come back to the same old topic "it would be better elsewhere"...

Ultimately we're all on seabreeze for the same reason that we all windsurf or for the reason that six or seven of us have given up our (already lacking) free time to organise the season - we're PASSIONATE about what is an awesome sport.

How about we agree to do the following until the next AGM comes around - deal with the locations and hope for an amazing season, both at the comps but also for free sailing. Can I please ask that we all get behind the sport and help the NSWWA do what we are mandated to do - provide good comps that help to develop the competitors and provide a fun, friendly atmosphere for new competitors.

The 11th/12th is an Illawarra based, roving event - we just chose to have a BBQ at Gerroa as we know a good house to do it in!!

Personally I can't wait to get back into it as I haven't sailed for three months.

mt selwyn is more hardcore

If you go to perisher make sure to find krusty and tell him to get back up to Sydney and do some work!! You'll find him shivering in a hut halfway up the mountain.

Smiggens holes is where the tru hardcore lay it down.
