It's called Summer's a Breeze, from about 1988, probably shot in Esperance. I've been wanting to see this for 20 years. Does anyone know how I could get a copy?

That was a great movie. I remember watching it about 50 times just before I came over here for the first time. (christ that was nearly 20 years ago)
It had footage of Margies, Esperance, Dutchies and I think even a bit on the river.
It would be good to see that one again. There must be a few vhs copies stashed away somewhere.

Yep, Summer's a Breeze was a classic, the whole thing was shot on film and cost - you don't want to know!
It was the brainchild of Ray ----- , I see him every now & then (he's a kiter now) , he's still got the same camera and was even talking about making a sequel the last time we met.

Hi Wendell, I have the first copy off the press it turned up courtesy from Ray Swarts who was staying with me when he was making the film. It arrived on a Friday of a state round. I had Dave Sheen who features predominantly as did Josh and a heap of others who were in the film staying with me (timing)Jeoff Hillwood who also features in it dropped around and took it to Arials cafe and it ran hot all week end. I dragged it out tonight - it's a classic. It reminds me of when we all got along , board riders just loving the ocean what ever you rode. PM me I just might send it over

The great appeal of this vid was that it was local. I could spot guys I knew and boards that mates owned and spots we sailed for the first time. As a grommet at the time it was just mind blowing to watch the good guys and know that it was local.

It was fun to watch the pros learning to forward. Nigel Howel of England was just learning, Geoff Hillwood and Shane Morris (I think) were so polished their barrell rolls were awesome. You could see Sheeny stacking a few, and loved watching him uphaul between monster sets at margies. And Scotty had long hair.

There is the classic stack where Anders Bringdal gets flung between his sail and boom while hooked in in mid air after his feet come unstuck from the straps.

The narration was by Fred(Boticka?) the 96fm/mix 94.5 dj, also an ex windsurfer. Anyone remember "Rocksat"

The esperance footage of Josh Adams is still brilliant, 20 years later.

And when I get that feeling...Summer ...Summers a breeze...

I got a copy of Quaterly sitting on my shelf too and the 2 annuals they bought out.. Josh Adams on the back cover flogging off Rip Curl wave sails...... sweet

Any ideas who owns the copyright ?
Might be able to look at some form of mass duplication.. maybe with sales going towards the up and coming nats if we can get it cleared with the owners/copyrighters ???

Check my previous post above, they own the rights. You'd want to be real careful about copying it because it cost $100,000 + to make and I think they took a bit of a loss!

$100K... did they spent $90K on music licenses?

Something I am still wondering about The Windsurf Movie... Licensing one of those Rolling Stones songs should be around $20K . Can't see how that project would make any money.

It's a lot of money for sure, especially back then but the movie was targeted more to the mainstream, to be shown in cinema's.
Ray spent one year making a demo film which was shown to investor's who then put in the big buck's. The demo film was pretty good as well but was never seen again.
It was supposed to be along the line's of Windrider, you know that old windsurfing movie with Nicole Kidman.
Add to that the whole thing was shot on film, which had so many hidden cost's.

ahh... Windrider... I think I still have that somewhere on VHS.

yup... those were the days back in the 80s. When you could get a 100%+ tax credit for investing in film productions.

Would be interesting to see that film. Anyone know if it can still be bought or rented from any video stores?

The guys who made it have done alot of big production snow movies so they would have had alot of industry support and old conections, also naish, oxbow etc. would have thrown alot of cash at it aswell as Levi.. Naish etc would have got major advertising out of that film... I'm sure the producers would have got payed back what they put into it..

it obviously was worth their while otherwise they wouldn't have gone into producing part II.

However, I am very dubious about a lot of windsurf productions currently out there on shelves using commercial music from big name artists.

Every time I budget for any video production music licensing often is as much as 50% of the overall budget.

Given how few copies they sell one must wonder how they can afford to license all that music.

oki doki... currently going through my pile of old VHS tapes (so I can finally decomission) my VCR which has been catching dust for the past 8 years... and happened to stumble across this little beauty called "Magic Wind" which features Dave Sheen and was shot Jack McCoy. I think a lot of the footage from "Summer's Breeze" was re-used in this production.

I'll try and upload a copy to YouTube over the next few days...

Magic wind is a rare on. Sheeny barrel rolling his way along the southern ocean.
Jack McCoy used to show it as a preview before the main surfing feature film when he did the road tour films at the local hall in regional towns.

I remember a crayboat dropping Sheeny off at outer reef spots. I look forward to seeing it again. good luck with the upload stehsegler.

Having made a few I can say it is quite expensive doing movies. The gear costs are really high, editing takes huge time and some good kit or you have to hire facilities - also expensive.

Summers a Breeze was awsome. If the owners of the copyright converted it to DVD and supplied a few to the stores the cost of conversion is quite low. I am sure it would pay for itself.

The tax concessions on local production was very good - rules changed only last year so you now have to spend over $250k on it to get the concession! The problem was it was a tax concession - if you did not earn the money you could not claim the concession back - so it required the funder to have a good income for it to work.

I have thought of trying to get a group of sailor / filmers together to pool resources for a high quality local production, but being based in SA I am not really in the right location. Someone from WA would need to take the lead. Problems of consistent quality in footage (HD 1080) and variety of spots and sailors is also important....

Anyone interested? I would happy to be a part, but not 'lead' it.

Hi guys love that movie too, gives you such a warm longing and crave for the sport and the ocean does'nt it :D .
Anyway I've got a .wmv computer file with the movie. Its a 750mb file so you will need to show me an upload place of your own to catch it. I taped it back then from the tele and made conversions, also to DVD.
Its a must have. :D Cheers
