They say they use a 6.2 as Ideal and 6.5 rec. Has anyone ever ridden this board with a 6.2 and how did it go? It seems surprisingly big to me.

I have. It didn't feel that great. But 6.2 never does to me. The board could take it though. I wouldn't really want to put anything bigger on.

I used to rig a 6.2 on mine and it went pretty well... mind you I'm 194cm and 90+ kilos.
I used both a wave sail and a freestyle (lighter weight) sail in 6.2m2.
What model/year board are you referring to ?
The last JP FSW 84 I rode with this size sail was a the 2007.

It will be 2009 FWS 84. I have also got a 2009 Pro 101 coming as well. The sail is a 6.2 2008 NP alpha.

You may wonder why I ask with a bigger board as well? The reason is, I will take it to Coronations and leave the bigger board behind in QLD.

Last Dec I only took a 5.4 and 4.7. Being 86 kgs there was one day I could really have used the 6.2. Also I found that Lancilin was lighter wind and will probably stop there again. With both boards I'll also have a bigger fin from the 101 to match up with the 6.2. Hopefully give a bit more drive. My old boards would push sideways when loaded up like that.

That's the sail I was running along with the Expression.
The JP FSW is a great entry level wave board IMO

Pretty awesome as a bump and jump machine and with a wave fin inserted... they can go pretty well on the wave... just a little too fast and a tad too thick in rails when compared to a dedicated wave board, again this is just IMO.

The RWW may be worth a look in the mid 80 literage range (82lt) for something more wave dedicated if you are that way inclined, but you will struggle with a 6.2.. the 5.4 alpha is the largest sail I tend to run with the 82 RWW... schmick combo for the ahem 'larger gents'

Thanks for that, Here in Queensland speed is a good thing. I mostly bump and Jump anyway. We don't have the conditions you enjoy. The waves here can be great but unfortunately the wind seems to always be 2-3 knts to light. The 84 is for QLD first, and a holiday board second. I also want it to run well in flatter conditions. That is why I didn't go for a RWW. The biggest difference Between the States I noticed was WA is cream run on the way out. Here we go through horrible shore break then a washining machine followed by serious dumpers. That's just to get out.

I can't wait to get back over there........

If they say 6.2 is OK, and you put in the find from the 101 you will surely be fine.

(I'm 95kg) For Coro, on a good day I'd be on 4.2 and a 75L with 20cm fin so I think you also need a smaller fin for the 84L !!!!!!!!!

mate, last I checked you were actually shorter than me... 194cm? did you grown in the last few months?

But seriously... 6.2 is ok but not great. In my opinion you would be better off with a 5.4 to 5.7 ... 5.8 is probably were I would draw the line. In my experience the additional weight and drag of the sail counters the increase in size. But then again... never really liked big sails...

Just read the original email again. "Ideal" ? I hardly would call 6.2 ideal on that board. I would say 5.0 is ideal... then on the 92 FSW 5.4 is ideal.

Its an illusion mate... your extra girth gives the perception of height

And those extra kilos you have packed on over winter have pulled you closer to the ground... it's simple gravity !

i used to have the 91 litre, a 5.8m even felt too big on it, you would have to run a bigger fin and thats no fun..

Hey Bill, have never used a 6.2 on mine it's a 03 FSW 84 but agree it would take it. I typically use 5.0 - 5.8 in Qld which is a great for our conditions, have used down to a 4.0m in WA...board starts to feel a bit big over 30 knots, as you know that's not too common in Qld though!!
