Yer Rider is right, winter has full on conditions, not your typical wavesailing conditions, you will have more fun in summer in lighter more constant wind, as far as breaking stuff well that comes down to learning how to control your downed gear in the waves and how to get out of dangerous situations fast.
But then you will get better and you will try to hit that lip a bit later or try to jump a bit higher and then you will start to get really worked.. but it's a hell of alot of fun pushing yourself..
As far as my trashed gear this winter only 1 totally destroyed sail 1 torn one, a small ding in my fav board

and a brused ego but i wouldn't have traded 1 day of it for anything...
