Is it me or is the Evo particularly sensitive to nose bashing?

I'm on my third nose repair now, my mast seems magnetically attracted to the front deck of my Evo.

Any one else out there think the same?

Seems like with such a short front end compared to older longer boards and a high boom the mast hits the nose and trash's it, need a mast protector below the boom - maybe a low cut converted boom bra .

Some guy had a photo in a Boards magazine of surf board gorrilla grip across the nose and reckons that worked well

I whack the nose of my evo and fanatic freewave on occaisions and it usually leaves a black mark from the mast and sometimes a mother of a crack.

My Evo is partial to scraping over shallow submerged reef and rocks and putting holes through the bottom.

think it's because there rounded nose boards, when the nast hits it, it has no where to go, where as the pointy nose boards, the mast tends to deflect down either side of the nose, only grazing it or puts those long cracks in the paint. the squared off nose boards are the worst of all, like the old fanatic newwaves etc. it usually just splits them in half.

3 people i know with evo's have all had nose jobs....

After 4yrs on 2 EVO's I've only hit it a few times and cracked once. I think it is all in the catapault, I go a bit more downwind then you perhaps??

Don't glue foam on it, then a good hit can crack it underneath you'll never see it and there will be water seeping in forever.

If it really annoys you, you can make a fake nose like JP sell (at an exorbitant price) for theirs..... but yours will cost $10. Lay black garbage bag plastic over it, then lay up a good 5-10 layers of glass. Take it off, cut to shape, fill/sand/paint and then you have a glue-on nose protector. I'd just bung it on with silastic but can be hard to remove later

Hard to do if you're 15 foot in the air falling away from your kit...

My worst nose damage was when I wasn't holding the boom well enough (prior to a beach start) due to fatigue, a big gust ripped it out of my hands....

Yep have an 04 92 and just done the second nose repair.Although both repairs where purely cosmetic ,no water got in , Just cracks and peeling paint.....I'd say from trashings in the waves etc.

Also noticed on the top of the board you can now see the join of the hi-density foam....looks like a crease but it's as hard as a rock??? Anyone else seen this? Seems to be a starboard thing as it happened to an acid 74 i had too....

Where abouts is that on the deck - I got a wood 05 92l

can't see much other than wood (and a harness hook hole filled with bog)

Between the front foot straps and the mast track.Again this is not a crease it's the join of the high density foam.

Is it straight across???? If they had to join the divinycell it should be a V shape (or at least on the diagonal).

I've never seen it, but you do tend to see the layer of glass line about 18" back from the nose on the underside

Yeah i guess you could say it's kinda diagonal but not extreme.You can't feel it but in the sun you can see it.
BTW it's not a wood edition.

I reckon that would be an extra glass patch over the footstraps area

Yes but then it would have been there from new.
This is something that slowly developed and then stopped.The board is four years old now and has spent alot of its time on roofs of cars , in vans etc.. (vent plug always undone when not in use).Doesn't really worry me as the board is hard as a rock . Just wondering if anyone else has seen the same on their evo's/boards.

A few boards I have had sort of 'developed' the visible line after a few years. Not saying it is the glass or carbon patch ending but I have boards that looked smooth as a babies bum on the bottom then after 2 yrs you could see it on the underside just back from the nose and it is the end of a glass layer

I disagree mark, the d'cell is there for compression not tension, a square butt join should be fine, as long as it's well bogged up, if there's any sort of void, then you have no compression strength and a weak spot.
I've been doing it this way with out a problem, ever since I started using high density foam, almost 10 years ago.

If it was a big bog job, and not completely cured, the resin will shrink as it fully cures, This may be what's happened.

I think the material either side of the join has shrunk with age or compression from my fancy footwork on the board over the years.The extra resin at the join can't compress or shrink.Therefore it appears as a small raised line on the deck.Note you can't really feel the line but you can see it in the sun at an angle or when the board is wet.
Well thats my theory anyway. I guess the answer will be known if i snap it next season and the break is at that spot or not...[}:)]

I have a line like that on my 04 Evo 92, but it's underneath not on the deck. I always figured it was extra reinforcement of some sort (wood or divinycel?). It's been there for at least 3 years and never caused a problem. Actually I'm really impressed with the longevity of the board. It's almost 5 years old and still going strong.

I have the 05 Evo (not wood) and noticed the line on the underside around about where the line of the nose ends and the rocker of the board starts.

It's good to hear that I'm not alone and hopefully all our boards aren't going to fail around the same time.

But if they don't fail how are we ever going to get round to buying new toys?
