I've never seen it, but you do tend to see the layer of glass line about 18" back from the nose on the underside
I disagree mark, the d'cell is there for compression not tension, a square butt join should be fine, as long as it's well bogged up, if there's any sort of void, then you have no compression strength and a weak spot.
I've been doing it this way with out a problem, ever since I started using high density foam, almost 10 years ago.
If it was a big bog job, and not completely cured, the resin will shrink as it fully cures, This may be what's happened.
