WTF?? The guy either came 2nd or he didn't.
If he did, his name should be listed as 2nd on this new site, especially as the posts above claim to welcome overseas competitors with open arms.
Can't remember if he got a trophy or not (would have to dig up the photos) but Volwater is listed as 2nd in the Open devision for 2005. From memory they did a pseudo vote at one of the skippers meetings. Everyone agreed foreigners should be allowed to enter as it gives up and coming sailors the opportunity to measure themselves against the best in the sport. Especially if they are planning to compete at some stage in overseas events.
And a good decision it was.
a) It's the only correct choice
b) having a list of past winners containing a variety of foreign entrants will show the healthy level of competition that can go on here, and encourage more to do it
c) it's reciprocated in many other countries (the US allows foreign entrants I believe, and from memory Steve Allen was "European Champion" in racing several years ago
d) there's no dodgy result tampering (if I come 10th at the nationals, and the top 9 happen to be overseas guys, am I suddenly going to strut around calling myself Australian Champion and expect to be in the history books? please)
The sport is tiny in Oz. Encourage anyone who wants to enter, and if they do well, recognise them for it.
It may push you to sail better. And if you're not good enough to beat them, suck it up!
