After a short lay off i returned to windsurfing last weekend at green point and loved it. Prior to my recent 2 - 3 year stop start of sailing i'd had sailed full on for about 12 yrs in the UK and WA.
Keen to get back into it and increase my sailing time / window here in Melbourne i think I need to invest in some bigger kit. Currently run a 6.2m as my biggest sail.
Previously I have had a 2001 starboard carve 111 ( i still have the board and it goes well ) and put a 7.8m sail on with a 38cm fin, as my bigger stuff.
Here's what I am thinking.
Sail choice, I like the look of a Severne NCX 7.5m ??? ( Saw guys on them in Perth and they where screaming a long )
Board choice, looking at something like a JP supersport 118 or a Starboard Futura 122.
I am keen to go for a bit more performance kit. Not full on slalom but certainly a bit more than freeriding.
Any advice to get this old windsurfer back out there would be very much appreicated.
Both the JP and the starboard in the size you stated would be perfect for your weight and to get the most out of our summer seabreeze a 7.5 sail would be a good investment. Im 78 kgs and run as my biggest sail a 7.2 h2 on my 100 L Supersport, Also If you can aford it a smaller fsw type board would get a lot of use in the bay and would be a bit more forgiving than the SuperSport/Futura when it gets lumpy. Some may disagree but I would call the SuperSport/Futura as de-tuned slalom boards rather than freeride and depending on your skill can become a a bit of a handfull in short chop. But if you want more performance you are on the right track. Also last time I was at SHQ they still had the SuperSport around that size for demo.
I found the Futura111 and a 7m Ezzy Freeride a great choice for the light to medium strength seabreeze's we generally get in the bay especially over the last few seasons. I'm 82kg. Gets me out in 14-20 knots winds. Over 20 knots it's a bit of a handful at my weight, especially the board. I would recommend the ezzy rdm's but both rdm's and sdm's can be used with all Ezzy sails. If your after a little more performance then the Ezzy Infinity is a great choice with it's 2 cams. 38 and 40 cm C3 Venoms seem perfect for the above setup.
I am 92 kg and use a 122 futura and love it. in flat water its really fast and easy to sail but you do need a few fins for whe it gets windy as 122 is a fair bit of board in chop
I also use a jp freestyle 100 that I picked up second hand this year it's fine for when it gets windy
I have the Super Sport 109L with an Ezzy Freeride 7.5m sail and 42cm fin. I weigh 85 Kg and find the combo perfect for the bay. I also run a 6.7m (36 cm fin) and 5.9m sail ( 36 or 30 cm fin) on it. The Ezzy sail has a large wind range, often changing fins is all you need if it picks up.
Pretty much sold on getting a 7.5 and 6.5 ezzy now. The new mast and boom i will need for the bigger rig will see me using my old carve 111 for a little while longer.
