One of our WV great volunteers has suggested we look at getting involved the Windsurf for Cancer Research (Sunday May 1st 2011) being hosted in the UK. I think this is good idea and so do others.

What I am proposing is if a number of us can form a event committee for this event. The event committee will define an idea what we can do to help with this great cause. Please send your event committee interest to president@wv.org.au All other ideas can be posted here on Seabreeze.

I would like the event committee to get together next week to discuss the posted suggestions (options) and to engage a event model, including updating the Windsurf for Cancer Research crew in the UK about our intended support.

Two things come to mind.

48 hour relay. Each rider gets 30 minutes to do as many laps as he can on a pre set short course. The passing of the batton is the handover of the GPS on the beach.
Start 7am Sat, end 7pm Sunday.

Riders can do more than one 30 minute session, but not consecutively, there must be handover of the gps to another rider between sessions. Lighting maybe a challenge but perhaps there are ways that this can be obercome. (Can be borrow Katos helmet)

OR....

Long cruise with max sails on water! Something like Seaford to StKilda!

Happy to help and participate!

I'm happy to be on the committee to get this set up - I would appreciate a place that served liquid refreshment for the meetings though.

Let's keep whatever we do basic and aim for numbers of sailors in one place rather than anything too complicated - with this in mind it would have to be in the bay, inverloch or sandy - but probably in the bay, either the holy trinity (green point/ ricketts/ dendy) or somewhere flexible down south?

I like the idea of rigging in the dark and launching at sun rise... but this is likely to be big board weather given the wind strength at dawn...

Hi Steve, Perhaps with enough eager sailors and the right support, we could manage an event just like the Round the Bay in a day?? Just utalise the local sailors and see if we link up and sail around the bay. Does not have to be all in 1 day but it could set up a time to beat for the following year. Cheers, Simon

Thanks for the posts and event ideas, but I never received any emails nominating people to help out organising this event. As time is short and we still have to get approval from our local authorities to run a charity. I can't see if we would be able to get it up and going in the time we have left.

I would suggest in future all good ideas like this we need to know well in advance and have a committed team that can help put it together. With that in mind we now have plenty of time to think about next year and if any of you would like to be part of organising events, late June 2011 I will be hosting the WV AGM. One of the committee changes I will doing is adding an event group. This group will consist of WV members who can help with events from generating ideas, to marketing, to running them, etc. The group I would assume will contain other windsurfing club, stores and yacht club members.

Perhaps for this year, rather than "Windsurf for Cancer Research", we could all get together to Windsurf for Cancer Awareness. This way we don't need to approval to raise money and it would then help with the format for next year. Surely this would greatly reduce the amount of workload in organising. Happy to help organise if required.

Simon,
The 'Windsurf for Cancer Awareness' is good idea.
Over the weekend I will come up with some words to promote the idea of getting as many people out on the water on the 1st May. I will also look at some way of creating a register to show how many poeple did sail that day. With posiable a photo gallery too. I'll also chat to our WV webmaster about this.
This could be promoted back to the cancer foundation etc.
