Hi,

I'd like to learn how to wavesail and I am contemplaining about doing a course with Guy Gibbs in Torquay in late January. I am based on Sydney however and want to make sure that it's worth to go. The alternative is Geraldton, but that's even harder and more expensive to get to.

Is Torquay wave-entry beginner friendly?
Can you rent gear in the area and/or would it be better to bring my 4.5, 5.0 sails and 84 fsw?
How likely is it that the conditions are going to be good in January? Do you consistently have good conditions?
Has anyone done the course with guy?

Go to gero... Torquay is not often windy, and not particularly swelly in January.

Gero is windy, warm, flat on the way out and waves out the back. It's perfect to learn.

The reason why Torquay was my pick is due to the course being offered there and some formal instruction on what to look out for seems a good place to start.

gerora? I assumed you meant Geraldton in WA - or do you mean Gerroa in NSW?

Coronation Beach is very beginner friendly as it has a large flat section before you hit the waves.

I see Cribby is doing tuition in Lancelin in January which is close to Perth, has lots of hire gear, is very windy and has a nice flat section before you hit waves. This would be your best bet.

Since you are in NSW (or are you elsewhere?), then Gerroa is where you want to go... now is the best time of the year.
Speak to the locals, they are a good bunch and most of them are very good wavesailors.

I did guy cribbs wave sailing course in Torquay earlier this year and I'm doing it again.

we sailed a place called rafs. It's all sand and friendly waves. If not there, we are likely to sail point danger at torquay which is very easy to get in and out because there is no shore break. The waves are full and not dumpy.

the chances of wind are 50/50. We had Very light wind when I went. I learnt more in those two days then I have ever learnt. i learnt how to fast tack and get up wind in light conditions. His method of teaching is based around muscle memory - so there are lots of drills on the beach.

if you watched the aloha Classic at hookipa this year you would have learnt that the key to wave sailing is being able to get out in very light winds. We can all blast over white wash In strong winds. Guy will teach you how to do it in light winds. You will learn how to plan your route out and back, how to do FAST beach starts and water starts.

It will take your sailing to another level.

as for equipment... bring a board that's 10litres more than you weight.

Im 75 kg and I'm taking a 4.8 and 5.3. It's very rare that I need to pull out my 4.4. And anything bigger than a 5.7 is too big for waves.

Thanks Yuppy. Ill go for Torquay. The dates are over a weekend and I can go for work around that time to Melbourne so I don't really need to pay for flights myself. So its probably worth taking the risk of not perfect conditions but I'll learn then the basics and continue in gerora.

Where and how do you book Torquay? The cribbs' website is not up to date.

When down at the sandy point weekend over Melbourne cup weekend I won an instruction Dvd from shq now I have been sailing for 35 years and it is great. I think it has a price tag of something like $60. But you should get that. It is great. Must be many DVDs on learning in the waves. Ask any shop. I would say almost better than a course. Or do both and you will be wanting a 4 meter and smaller board

Does anyone have any confirmed info about Guy Cribb's courses this year? I'm keen to go to one but am finding it difficult to get details.

It's well worth doing a course with him any where. It really doesn't matter what the conditions R like U will learn a lot and be happily exhausted. He is very good at what he does - and he maxes everything out regardless of what the conditions are.

The forecast doesn't matter. You learn more if there is less wind.

We had crap wind last year and it was great.
