Parked the car in Beach Rd Hampton last saturday and went for a sail. Friend called me in to tell me a cyclist had gone through my rear car window. A similiar thing had happened to him the previous week. Cyclist was on auto and forgot to look ahead. He was cut up but ok (minus a $3000 bike). My damage was $2150 but he has agreed to pay. Has this happened to others on Beach Rd?
Thinking of putting witches hats behind my car in winter when there are not so many other parked cars. Any better ideas to avoid this danger in future?

Well one positive, he was clearly in the left lane instead of riding on the right lane as well. Guess you're lucky he didn't do a runner.

This happened to a mate of mine...but he was the cyclist.

He slammed into the back of an unmarked police "speed camera" car at 50km/h, which was arguably parked illegally.

He totally re-arranged his face, jaw totally separated from the rest of his skull, new nose (looks better then his previous nose), and left teeth imprints in the rear of the cop car.

I got a bit of a soft spot for cyclists coz i is one. Had my fair share of weird stacks. Most recent was being sideswiped by a horse in Swanston Street coz the rider didn't check his blind spot.

I have also nearly taken the heads off a few cyclists and rollerbladers when rigging at St. Kilda....oops

During the summer seabreeze, I sail there just about every day. I've never seen it happen, but I regularly get cursed at by simply parking there.

The real issue is that some bike riders travel too fast on the sidewalk bike lanes. And the parking inspectors...

I don't think it is as much of a problem in summer as there are so many cars parked there they have to notice. In my case I was the first parked car in a straight line of about 250m. Guy is really good about it but couldn't do a runner as his bike was snapped in half just above the front forks.

Got hit by a few car doors when I lived in the city,last one used my knee to rebend the cross bar to a right angle Drive a big car now,works great with car doors [}:)]

Waggles, I suggest that you tow a 6x4 trailer. And if you really want to be nice to inattentive cyclists, keep an old mattress in it.

I ride to work most days. I have a little sympathy for other cyclists but for Pete's sake it's up to them to KEEP ALERT. I wonder whether the guy who launched into your rear window was listenting to his iPod at the time. I see that all the time, and in peak hour commuter traffic. It's just nuts.

One of the guys in our neighbourhood recently rode into the back of a tray truck that was parked on the side of the road near the bottom of a hill. 2 broken legs, broken arm, broken ribs and pelvis, broken jaw. As a doctor, he was probably not in a good way to diagnose all his injuries.

I don't think there's anything you can do, although parking on a climb rather than a descent might mitigate the damage. Or if it's flat, only park there when there's a 30kt headwind!
