Hi Guys,

Looking at making a virgin trip down to Sandy Point this Friday.

Need some info.

What are the best forecasts on the net for that area. I am looking at Lakes Entrance on seabreeze only at the moment. Any info would be greatly appreciated as dont want to drive 7 hours to find it was a waste of time.

Also, anyone stayed at the Fish Creek Hotel. Is the accom, food and beers good. Im guessing if we get a sail Ill be looking for a decent hotshower as well.

Any info appreciated. Ive got fingers crossed for some decent conditions.

Cheers.

Yikes, 7 hour drive! I think I'll let the sandy point experts answer this one, don't want to be responsible for getting you to drive down when there is no wind. So far seems Sunday might be the day.

On the current forecast model I am not sure I would be driving 7 hrs

But it may all change tommorrow!!!

Forecast - www.windguru.cz/15753
Low tide about 1pm Saturday,2pm Sunday - low tide is best!
Sunday and Monday look like the best chance at this stage.
I have had a beer and a counter meal at the Fishy pub and it's not bad(Don't say anything bad about cows and you should be ok)

With the seabreeze forcast usually the metro forecast is more likely to be accurate at Sandy Point than in the bayEast coast forecast wont get anywhere near it!

If you are aiming to have a go on the speed strip - then dont... the forecast isn't looking that good at the moment. Otherwise, its looking like 15kn at best.

This should give you an idea if its windy - the speed strips work on a W-SW or E:
http://www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/prom.html

Note that for the W/SW direction, it reads higher than what the PiT actually gets.

goo screw is right . dont go by the seabreeze forcast. the Bom is much better.

when i sail the pit i have a list of stuff i do before i drive up there. And i only live 1 hour and 20 mins.

1. I check the bom for the bass straight forecast the night before.
2. I get up in the morning and pop me head out the window and look at the trees
3. I then go on the bom and look up the wilsons prom live wind observations.
4. as a rule if it says on the bom it's 30 knots at wilson's prom you take off 10 knots at the pit.

This time of year the pit is fireing nice. It should not let you down. another thing to remember to is. It can be alot more windier, than what they forecasts for the day. So you will need at least 2 sails. A 5.0-6.0 and a 6.5-7.0.

Another thing too, dont look at the lakes entrance forecasts thats a big no, no, . I use to holiday down there and the wind is totally different. trust me, lake entrance gets no way the amount of wind sandy point does. I use to wait weeks for the wind at lakes entrance when i was staying there. Every summer me and me brother would get skunked. They seem to get different weather there.

Hey windybee, you left out ya final step
5. drink me down a coupla cans of redbull, son

North westerlies are good for the other side, Waratah bay....The forecast is getting 5 knots stronger each day so far this week....

Looks a certainty now for atleast one windy day this weekend, hopefully both!

Any other nearby spots for a good sail in other wind directions in that area? Keen to go somewhere new so if Sandy isnt working then we'd be looking to get cold elsewhere.

Cheers

Inverloch is 20 minutes closer to Melbourne but wind direction this weekend is not ideal. Best on SW, S, and SE

Itching to go.

Using your experience of the BOM forecast (normally here its totally wrong) do you think we will get a sail at Sandy or close by. Sunday looks promising.

Where, based on the latest forecast do you think we should head. If it means Melbourne we will be there. It will be good to have a sail and a few beers no matter where we need to go. Gotta love a road trip.

All suggestions/experience appreciated

Well, you wont find any at Sandy Point. You might find a couple grazing in the top left paddock as you leave Fish Creek.
.....Good Luck.

Agree. Rye tends to be the place of choice on Port Phillip Bay if the wind is a northerly. I'll be there Sunday morning, unfortunately not enough time on Sat. If the forecast remains strong, bound to be a bunch of windsurfers there on both days. Although most windsurfers from the city will only make the trip if it's above 25knots.

Rye is full of sandbanks which tames the shore break somewhat in close for some semi-flat water, with the decent ramps further out. Low tide can get scary with the sandbanks but thankfully this weekend will avoid the king low tides during the day. So any fin less than 30cm will be fine in close to shore.

Bunch of us at Rye a month ago.

On this BoM website, South Channel Is indicator is accurate for Rye.
http://www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/bay.orig.html

Here is the dirt carpark most launch from. You'll see the kites and windsurfers as you approach along the coast. If you pass traffic lights once you're in Rye you've gone too far.

Wow... i didnt think anyone used the original bay page anymore; I've thought about decommissioning it several times but never got round to it. How come you use the old map?? (The "new" one - though probably three years old now - is at: www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/bay.html )

I did notice when I looked it up on other computers I could never get the same version. Only reason I have this one is it's saved to favourties on my computer. Feel free to decommission it, I'll just change to the other one. If you're the one who runs this site, many thanks, it is priceless.

Ellobuddha, cant believe our wind meters were reading only 20knots this morning. I have never been consistently flattened on my 4.2 in 20knots Might check the batteries.

True to typical Melbourne form the wind died at lunch then a westerly squall hit around mid afternoon...anyone out when that hit?

It was great to meet you Ellobuddha and your friend. I am glad that Victoria and Rye put on a good show for you, both with the wind and a great turn out of local sailors. Would have been embarrassing if we said drive 7 hours to Rye only to find no wind.

Still can't believe you haven't had a sail since summer. I go crazy if it's been 2 weeks.

Catch you next time.
