has anyone wave sailed at point nepean and quarantine.... supposed to be an epic surfing spot on its day. Said to work in SW'ly.....

Would love to get some recon in.......

Thought about going over from queenscliff or point londsale....

would want a support speed boat due to rip and tip but would be awesome

Any info or personal experience other than Mr Holt's would be welcome.

Just remember that when the wind is up for a sail it's usually time for power boats to head home. I wouldn't be crossing the Rip on an outgoing tide against a SWesterly in more the 15kts. Not in my boat anyway. The ferry might be another matter.

Nice part of the bay. Never sailed there but had a great day boating/snorkelling in the area last summer. Actually it would be OK coming in from Sorrento if the SW wind is up. Protected all the way and offshore. Just a bit hairier the closer you get to the very tip of Pt Nepean.

Totally agree with mikey. Even surfing the place it can get pretty hectihc (and crowded). One time some mates and I were surfing there, the tinny beside us got swamped - we also had to rescue one guy that was getting sucked out towards tassie!
Even with no wind it can be pretty full on. Hell currents, whirlpools, weeds, unexploded ordinance on the land...
At 20 kts multiply all that by 10. Not the best place to break gear

Go for it!

Not sure I would want to sail out across the rip at Pt Lonsdale. It can be pretty treacherous at times. Depending on the tide, you could be sucked out in minutes lol.

The tidal stream can peak at around 7kts.

yep works on a SE..
it needs a big swell to get in there and yeah you need a support boat to do it safely. A mate did sail over from Lonsdale one day and sail it but you need to get the tides right.

To be honest there are MUCH better waves to be sailed along that coast on a SE though..

Big lefts at Flinders is the most well sailed Left on the Peninsula.
Pumping Station - just to the right of the Gunna car parks is a good heavy left on its day and should have nice clean wind on a south-easterly,there is usually a left or two around Hayfield rd,Snatches,Spooks and there are the Gunna,St.Andrews and Portsea banks that should produce numerous lefts with clean wind on any easterly to southerly.
This coast has got a lot of waves that work well on SE or NW winds - if you are prepared to walk.

Myself and a few of the old school Torquay crew sailed Quarantine (Corsair as the westcoast guys call it) a few times about 10 or 12 years ago. Every time we sailed across the heads. I was light back then so never had a problem but a couple of the others sometimes struggled to get planing when sailing in the direction of the tide.

From memory it was best in E to SE and just before mid tide coming in. We never had a rescue boat but we always left on dead low tide so the water was almost still and if something went wrong when sailing the tide would push you into the bay.

I disagree with Joel, I would really suggest doing it one day, really really good!
