Hey Guys,

A few images of the remote control helicopters at The Zu yesterday. Can't wait to see the footage from the on-board camera. We are hoping to use these also for our downwind event in the next few months. Anyone with better shots or video?

Looks very cool.

Wonder what the range is like? Want to be pretty good at flying it and not ditching it in the ocean.

Think its a brilliant idea though....

This downwinder - going to be a session where we have every windsurfer in Melbourne racing down wind? Would be great to see everyone come out and form a massive crowd of windsurfers racing along....

Hi EJ
From my experience some are OK in up to 15 knots but after that, the operator's skills are pivotal.
We used one for a tracking shot down an exclusive golf course once and lost it on a gust. Score - Trees 1, Camera/Helicopter- NIL !

Yeah, I was thinking in anything over 15 knots it would be quite tricky. Not that I would know, never tried one. I guess the weight of the camera helps somewhat. Some pretty cool footage though I would imagine!

I've been flying RC helli's for a couple years now and they're bloody hard in any wind.

Not sure that windsurfing (water & wind) would be the best place to test out your $5k chopper.

Question Paul/Ivan,

Since we are all racing downwind from Green Point... how do we get back to our cars???

It had to be asked..

Surely, as the wind gets stronger, you just rig up a smaller helicopter!!

Apparently the larger rc helicopter in the pictures is still ok in 30 knots !

Downwinder:
Don't worry about getting back to your car, because well will have a BBQ and drinks afterwards at The Zu.

(we are actually planning to organize a bus to take you back to Green Point)
