Acting on the recommendation of Doug and Evan, I'm after a harness. Met a bloke a couple of days ago at Lysterfield who swore by his seat harness. Guys @ RPS reckon a waist harness for a relative beginner. Wondered what you thought? Tried a DA Kine T4 today and felt OK. Bloke at Lysterfield was using a ProLimit Rambler seat.

Depends on what sort of sailing you are doing. Wave guys seem to like waist harnesses as you can unhook quicker. Speed guys tend to prefer a seat harness. My first (and current) harness is a Prolimit Rambler seat harness and have found it easy to use. I had no issues at all learning with a seat harness.

Seems to be quite varied opinions on waist or seat. I'd also suggest a waist especially for a relative beginner. But others will certainly say seat. Best thing to do would be to try on as many as you can and hang out in them if possible. Make your own mind up on what's most comfortable.

I would definitely say waist harness for a learner / newbe. It promotes a less 'locked in" more upright stance and requires a bit less commitment than a seat harness. Seat harnesses are fantastic for slalom blasting especially with bigger sails. It is easier to get your weight further outboard with one and more efficient at commiting all your weight to the harness, but with a slightly more extreme stance.
Waist harnesses are definitely the go for more manouver oriented sailing and are more user freindly.
I use both, waist for farting around ,bump and jump on the wave boards and seat on the slalom, speed and Formula boards.

Go with a waist for starters and if you then get the blasting, speed bug consider a seat.
And definitely try them on and hang off the rig at the shop before buying. I bought a new waist harness last season after my old one finally died and I was amazed at how much the fit varied between different models and brands.
