Hey guys

I have a fly 9.6 that is a few years old but is great fun to sup and planes super easy so I've had fun with it in the bay as well...

Itching to give sup sailing a crack but never really feel confident to do it... Couple of questions:

Point Leo is the most accessible spot for me and also where I have done most my supping - is it a good place to start? I ask because at crunchy point the reef could be an issue - would hate to drop rig and break mast or nose on first day.

Crowds at point Leo I am a little concerned about as well, glad I sup through winter because there is already a fair bit of anger out there over the last few weekends.

Do I need to be able to water start? Up Hauling in the break I understand is troublesome but I've also read quite a few posts where 5 knots is enough for people so I cant imagine they are water starting.

Also is it cross to cross offshore winds I need? Can cross on work as well?

Finally anyone know what happened to this site and is there somewhere else to fin this info now? http://www.vicwavesailing.org

Good work.

Point Leo is good but wind direction can't be N to W. That would be too off shore.

Yes you can up haul. The reef is shallow so you would quite often beach start in three foot of water.

A couple of tips.

When you stack it. Point the tip of the mast toward the oncoming white water and push it under the wave. You duck dive the sail. Ignore the board. If you don't do this the wave will pick up the board and ram the tip of the mast into the reef and snap your mast.

Just kept duck diving the sail until the set passes. Jump up, up haul. And off you go.

Use a small rig. 5.0sqm max.

Let me know when you go. I'll come.

I'm getting a sup in a couple weeks

Also the Pines up the road is worth a look, sup sailed and windsurfed there a few times it probably needs to be ssw or s for the Pines.

As Yup said a small sail is the go and dont worry about getting the board planing.

I have just down sized my sup so keen to see how it goes with a sail compared to the old one.

YEA HA FINALLY DID IT!! Had a few mates go down tonight for a surf at point leo, I quietly thew the sail in the back of the car and spent the whole trip down there stressing about how I was going to get upwind etc etc... Approx 17 knots took a 4m with the 9.6 Fly.... SSW.. Almost packed it in as there was no wind until I got right past the point (in fact in the bay it was swirling round and felt like it was actually offshore)... was a min away from detaching sail and going back to get my paddle instead but finally felt the wind.. uphauled... sailed straight out nose direct through the small waves... promptly fell in the drink trying to tack out the back... no worries.. uphauled again & rest is history

Had an amazing time zipping in and out of my mates catching speed down the line then opening up the sail to ride the wave more directly down wind in fact I could actually throw the board around better on the wave and change direction than in all my time supping. Even gave one of my surfing mates a tow out, they both had a go and absolutely loved it as well!

Still buzzing best time ive had in ages! Oh and love the feeling of being able to hunt down the swell, even if you are a bit behind it you just put the power on and pump it onto the roller!

Thanks for the tips on the wind direction guys, really helped my first sup sail experience be amazing - knocked off at 9:15!
