We saw some guys sailing upwind at Mount Martha, I would of thought it would of been a bit sheltered the closer you get to the point but you guys appeared to be going ok.
Any particular reason you were up there as apposed to north of the estuary?
Some of the locals i know well were sailing there so i joined them, but got there late. They were there a lot earlier because the wind had a lot of westerly in it early-on. It had gone more southerly when i arrived so the north end would have been better - note how I didn't come into the beach, or even inside the yellow markers, once in 2.5hours of sailing!! Had to swim the last bit when i did...
Certainly a nice spot - I've only sailed that end once before. It has a good car park/rigging area, fewer rocks in close, the sandbars make it quite flat inside, plus less of a dumpy shorebreak and some reefs with larger waves offshore. The downsides are that directly in front is a no boating zone (but just sail either side), and as you say the cliff gets in the way once it tends more southerly.
