Just thinking about windsurfing options as you do when there is no wind. In an easterly wind I usually sail off Mornington Pier, which once your out past the cliff wind shadow is actually very good and is usually windier here than anywhere else on the bay in that direction. The danger is that if the wind drops too much I end up swimming in on an offshore direction when on my small gear.

I know Ricketts is a great options but I don't normally want to travel up there. Just wondering if anyone has tried Dromana in that direction. I was at the Dromana Jetty the other day and noticed that the land between Arthurs Seat and Mt. Martha was quite flat and should offer a decent channel for the wind to flow. Has anyone tried it?

It will, in that it will take up a lot water space and it will block more wind in westerlies, but depending on how it is made it might allow me to walk my gear to the end of the new pier and start from there which would be an advantage.

Be a long time though because they are getting a lot of opposition from what I have seen.

You could try Blairgowrie. I've had some good easterly sessions there in lumpy fun stuff and no need to worry about offshore conditions.

Looks like a good option. Fair hike though. Had an excellent session off Mornington Pier this morning trying out my new wave board. Gusting well above 25knots at times. Didn't think Dromana would work with any southerly wind in it.

I should correct my statement. In mint condition 2nd hand 2005 94L Starboard Acid. It's actually my first real wave board as it is replacing a 99L Carve which I unfortunately broke in half 3 weeks ago, (sorry Bondalucci, too many large jumps with bad landings). The 24cm drake fin will be ideal for my smaller sails but a bit too small for my 6.3 sail. I was only able to push upwind well once it hit 25knots. Luckily I have a 27cm freestyle/wave fin in the mail for the lighter days.

Compared to my Carve:
- doesn't plane as early (but I think I am just underfinned atm)
- drops off the plane earlier (as expected for a wave board)
- gybes sharper and almost as easily but doesn't hold the plane as long
- very loose feel
- doesn't upwind as well unless well powered up (hopefully bigger fin will fix this)
- cuts much better through chop
- rides higher on the fin

For a board that is only 4L higher than my weight in kgs I am so far very pleased with it. Quite excited to test it out on the days over 30knots.

a few months ago our mate's (Flippitty Flop) brother snapped his Starboard Carve clean in half off Ricketts Pt. I was amazed that there was only foam inside. (no internal stringer or longitudinal reinforcing) I assumed it was because it was a big board, (130ish) and the brief is to keep it light rather than design for jumping. In assumed the Carve 99 would have more going on inside.

Is this the case?
How far out were you?


I can sell you another board

It actually held together enough for me to sail back. I could have bent it the rest of the way with my hands. It is actually the second Carve I have broken in half, although my last one was 131L. The construction is also quite simple inside. They really are not meant for the punishment I gave it. I did some big jumps and even attempted a few back loops with it but have yet to land one.

Should be set with my Acid for now, they are reknown for their strength. Ultimately I would love to have both board, Carve for cruising, Acid for high wind and waves, however I had to go into my credit card for the Acid. So hopefully not buying anything else for a while.

Well got to give my acid a proper run with 6.3 sail and new 27cm fin, while also trying out Dromana in an easterly.

Massive thumbs up so far for flat water blasting on the Acid, it hoons and gybes on a dime.

Dromana works great in an Easterly once you get 100m out. I was cruising from the Dromana Pier to the Safety Beach cliffs. I wouldn't want to be out there when something breaks though.

Did you guys get a sail today?

went out at Sandy.. sailed out the front of the dunes for a bit but was underpowered and getting sent downwind in the current.. then went through to the inlet and had a blast

very gusty though

Hey Ginger, I think I met you once at Rye, when there was no wind. What gear you riding these days out of curiosity?

pretty good out in the waves over from the inlet. later in the afternoon it cleaned up and got bigger.
