Bought a carbon boom on Saturday....

I'd previously believed that carbon booms were a myth spread by the windsurfing industry - Paul needed to upgrade the home cinema system on his second lap pool and Fletch wanted to buy a third racehorse - but i sailed it on Sunday and I'm absolutely amazed by the difference.

Acceleration, positive feeling in the rig, early planing, comfort... everything. So much better...

Would definitely recommend one now.

Is it the first time you've windsurfed in a few weeks?

yeah they really are worth the money.. they last too. I couldn't tell you how many alloy booms I have snapped, but the carbon is still going strong! might need a re-grip soon though. Has anyone ever re-gripped a boom successfully?

Where did you sail on Sun GP? I got tricked into going out at green point, and yes it was as s*** as always there. Worst spot on the bay? yep

I got tricked into sailing at Rye by Kurt.

For obvious reasons, I never usually listen to Kurt but I let my guard down and got sucked into his mindless Rye optimism.

On the plus side, I got there before him and hit the water sufficiently before him to get a few goods run in.

Quite a few people made the drive, Chris, Darren, Stu D, Kurt and some strange guy with a fluoro assed wetsuit (a reminder to anyone tempted to buy a wetsuit off the internet...)

Nope - sailed twice at Sandy last weekend...

Intriguing question though .... are people more sensitive to booms if they haven't sailed in a few weeks?

I'm trying out a new carbon Powerex wave boom. It's awesome so far, really stiff and super light.

Yeah Rye was shocking. The best part about sailing at Rye yesterday was looking at those nice sculptures driving down the new freeway

Pretty impressed how quick it is to get down there now. The skull was the best sculpture in my opinion - they have done a good job.

I think for those who got out between 7-9.30 probably had a good run.....

Don't like my advice GP? Wonder how many times I have told you to get a carbon boom....haha!

I bought one on the weekend too. Severne. Enigma. First time I have used a carbon. Felt much nicer. No bouncing around in my hands. Don't know why but didn't feel overpowered with the carbon boom when I would normally have been overpowered during the 15 minutes of wind we had at GP on Sunday.

Hey it was crap everywhere on Sunday wasn't it? Did anyone have a sail on Sunday that was any good and lasted more than 15 minutes?

It is because carbon booms are much stiffer and hold the draft of the sail stable, whereas alloy flexes and the draft moves backwards making you feel overpowered.

2 hours from 7:30am up until about 10am at Rye. 5.2m and 87 litre. Never over powered but comfortable. Started to die around 10am.

A good carbon is worth it IMO, just for the added performance and feel.

Several of us sailed Swan Bay, Queenscliff. Me, 10am to 1.30pm, patchy at times but enough to keep my 79lt planning for all of it. Easy drive on freeways, but only a couple of sculpture to ponder.

It's the new grip that does that. i had exactly the same feeling when I went from a daggy old carbon boom I'd been sailing for a decade to a shiny new alloy one.

Other boom was six months (the last six months so f all sailing) old

the silver wind tree kicks ass over the rams head, although it powered, still would like to knock it off for my front yard. carbon booms way to go for sure.

The only thing worse than driving down to Rye for no wind is rejecting h2o's suggestion to go down earlier before the wind dropped!
