On the weekend I'll begin the move from Perth to Lakes Entrance. I've been a few times before but never to sail.

Where are the good wave sailing spots (PM me if u wanna keep them secret)?
Is it all mushy beachies of are there a few better spots within an hours drive?

Is anyone else down that way that might wanna sail together occasionally?

Cheers

Hi, Bertie,

Lakes Entrance to Waratah Bay is about a 3 hour drive, so this might help: www.wannasurf.com/spot/Australia_Pacific/Australia/VIC/East_Coast/lakes_entrance/

The info here says that the bottom is sandy, so banks will be made and broken and may not be consistent.

Suggest you Google "surf spots Lakes Entrance" to see if they can give you more help.

Yep, very uneven sandy bottom at all the spots I've ever checked out along the 90 Mile Beach and further east. Holes and rips everywhere, gutters close to shore, good for salmon but not for sailing.

A 90 mile sandy beach is a very long beach so there is not a lot of variety, and the inshore gutter and dumping shorebreak is very un-freindly to wave-sailing! It is often VERY windy though!

However. Near Lake Tyres, just a few KM's from Lakes Entrance is Red Bluff, or as the locals call it 'The Bluff'. It is a very rare bit of a sandstone point reef on this section of coast that can have some epic left hand surf every now and then, . There are also sand bars covering reef for a few hundred meters to the east of it towards the Lake Tyres entrance which could produce some excellent wave sailing as well in Easterly and East-North easterly winds (cross to cross-off and quite common in the summer months).

There were a few wave sailors down there in ancient times but I don't think there are any left now. If you are keen, its well worth a try though.

Otherwise it's back to the west of the Prom at Waratah Bay/Sandy Point. Actually, about Two and half hours away.

Do want to join us in the sometimes epic speed sailing fun at Sandy Point too?

Thanks for the replies gang.
Hopefully the bluff doesn't mess the wind about too much and I can get a wave there. Otherwise i Waratah bay or NSW might be the go.
I think kiting will be ok in the small crap near LE but u gotta get ya fix in every once in a while.
Hopefully I can make it to some vw events in the future!!!

Not wave sailing but lake sailing happens at Eagle Point and Tambo Bay, almost dead, only one or two left, kiteing is now more popular. Usually bout 5-10 kiters out and sometimes up to 15.

Also Marlo is a good sailing spot in an easterly, in the entrance.
