Got my third great sail in a row today. Decided to head to Rye. Sailed from 12pm until 3:30pm in a nice 25-30knots. At about 3pm I was heading out to the dark deep water past the pole when, wooooohh. a massive hump and fin roll out of the water 30 metres in front of me. I've sailed with the dophins a lot at Mornington but this was a first with the whales. I had heard there were some whales spotted at Sorento a few days ago, guess it's part of the same bunch. Unfortunately I didn't see him come up again. Shame the other 2 windsurfers and kiter had left by then.

Well there's my great experience for the day, hope the rest of you got a good sail in.

Weekend before last I had the chance to try SUPing in our local harbour with a few other guys (no wind obviously, but a rare warm-sunny winter's day in vic). Anyway, paddled out toward the mouth and had the exact same experience...would've looked funny to anyone watching - 4 guys standing there speechless and not knowing to go forward, back or which-way...

Would have been an awesome experience on a calm day floating on a board. I had the dilemma of wanting to get close but obviously not too close while planing through chop at 30knots unsure exactly where he would pop up next. Don't even want to think about a windsurfer/whale collision.

Not sure what you mean there Chef???
I heard there were 2 young fit-looking windsurfers cutting up the harbour! Can't get anyone else out on the water in this cold weather...it helps to have a bit of insulation on the bones.
