Hey guys,

I'm guessing that most of the dealers and resellers from Hobart are active on here but I'm also keen for any suggestions...

At the moment I'm using the hand me down tencate boards - been using a leaper and a spacer. Which are fun but rather large and a big pain in the a** when it comes to putting them on the car (especially after a decent sail and they weigh 5 -10 kgs more... and yes I realise that's not meant to happen )

So basically I'm looking for a second hand board - been suggesed about 120 litres?
I'm about 77kg's. I'd describe myself as intermediate with alot of work to be done on my basic skills...

I'm hoping to be able to get something in the next month or two (depending upon my own finances) so thought I'd see what's around in Hobart.

I'm keen to improve my windsurfing so thinking an upgrade in gear might motivate me!

2nd hand gear can be a bit rare in Hobart, but it does come up, most will advertise in the sea breeze buy &sell, and some on coastview.

If you can't find what you're after locally, don't be afraid to buy off the seabreeze Buy & Sell site. There are bargains to be had and you can post questions on this forum to see what other think of your choice before you commit to a purchase. A freight company called Trans Direct can deliver door-to-door and are reasonably priced.

Ben, I'd suggest if you're already at intermediate stage go for something a little smaller. I'm 78kg and just prchased a 110L which is quick, forgiving, very floaty, stable, fun, you'll progress quickly. A couple of years ago I bought a 120L freeride and found it cumbersome and slow on the jibes, sold it quickly. See what others think.

Also depends on what size sail you're planning to use with the board. Samller sail = smaller board. I reckon with a 120L board you'd want a 7-8m sail, whereas with a 100L board, probably 6-7m and under 100L you'd probably use a sail under 6m. Very rough, but good to consider what type of wind conditions and sail size you expect to use the board in/with before choosing the board.

You also probably want to get two sails down the track. Probably best to get the larger of the two first up for getting going in the lighter winds and then a smaller one to extend the range of the board when it's windier.

For a 100L board, maybe get a 6.5 and a 5.5 or thereabouts?

You will be able to uphaul a 120L board, but do yourself a favour and learn to waterstart. The shallows at Doran's Rrd and Cremorne Lagoon (aka the pond) are ideal locations to learn.

the waterstarts are getting better, more wondering in terms of if say i was half way between bellerieve and sandy bay and I ran out of wind... which has happened before

I reckon you should be able to uphaul a board that has about the same volume or a little bit more in Litres as you weigh in kgs. At you're weight of around 75-80kg, an 80L board should get you back in if the wind drops out and allow you to uphaul (just). However, the windier it gets the more difficult to uphaul, so as Easty says, as soon as it's windy enough to waterstart, you should be!! Anything around 100L should be fine!!

$500 would get you a pretty good board, but perhaps a few years older. Anything from 2000 onward should be fine in a free-ride style (I suspect)!! Ian murray up north has a Starboard Carve 99L for sale for $550 I think. That's a great board - I've sailed it a few times!!

yeah I saw that one. Biggest concern was the 99L fact and whether that might be a bit too small.
Can't say I'm too worried about the board being up to ten years old, that's still alot newer than what I'm cruising around on now

I reckon it would be OK, size-wise!! You should have a go on some boards down at Doran's and see what you think, volume-wise!!! I've got a 90L Carve (same vintage) that you could have a go on, along with a 5.3m wave-sail and rig. You're more than welcome to try it out and see what you think. None of it is or will be for sale, so not trying to sell it, but that's probably the easiest way to see what suits.

I'm an intermediate sailor who only started a few years ago. I can uphaul on my Xantos 152 and I'm 120 kg. So at 80kg 100 l will give enough to uphaul, However you'll find you don't go out unless there is enough wind to waterstart generaly.

Hi my first board i bought was a 115lt mistral syncro ive still got it and still love it i weigh 80kg and can up haul easy i would of liked a 110lt or 100lt now because of getting gradually better over time i think some one is still selling one on buy and sell tas in good nic and probably 2007 model selling for 750 if i was starting off id grab it. good luck with the search

being a seller of gear in Southern Tas i can say there is nothing i know of for sale in that size. Very popular when they do come up.
Anything within the last 5-6 years will get you a modern shape, i.e shorter and wider.
Also consider what area of the sport you are more interested in as a slalom/ high end freeride board is not much good if you want to start getter some air!.
Likewise a freestyle board is of no use if you have no desire to do wippy/flippy stuff!.
Personally i own a 100 litre board and weigh about 73kg, able to uphaul and get in without sinking etc when wind drops.
If buying on seabreeze ask questions about condition/ damage etc as the new boards do not like having had any water in them.

There are some good bargains out there to be had in new clearout gear and Second hand , just depends on what you want and how much to spend.
I am willing to help you if you want any advice re a board you have found etc.

Cameron, looks like I've dug my self into a hole and the more I try and dig myself out the deeper it will get, but in my defense if I have one is the fact I'd only ever sailed wave boards with a range of 76 - 95 L and when I went to the big 120L it just didn't feel right, just felt too big so I ended up with a 103L instead.
And yes you are a poor bast$%d[}:)], but your wife is gorgeous

I have a Starboard S Type 126L for sale. I think it is maybe a 2005 model (wood)
I have had this board to 34.60 knots so its quite fast for a big board easy to uphaul I weigh about 83 kg $700.00 This was my first decent slalom board after years of big board racing
