Hi guys,

Seriously looking for the right opportunity to buy a property somewhere between Huon Valley and Bruny Island, and
annoying my wife with "unreasonable" requests to be close to the windsurfing grounds

Don't mind driving, but sometimes, the wind just picks up, and you want to be there quickly.

Is Huon River Inlet sailable?

Do you guys sail around Great Bay (the area between Bruny Island and the mainland)?

If you want to be near sailing, do not buy south of Hobart. Although there are times when there is some good sailing to had down that way, it is fickle. Bruny Island can have good conditions when fronts are going through.
The most central area to be located in the south is the eastern shore of Hobart. Lauderdale and surrounding areas are the most central to make the most of all wind options. We had a mate(got rid of him) who moved to the Huon River, he spent hours instead of 10minutes driving for a sail. If you want to be able to grab a sail when its there and be close to home so you can maximise both family and sailing time, the eastern shore is the best option. Others may disagree and have better insight into the area.(Rob, Dave) Good luck!

I guess you can't have a lush and green surroundings, a creek, red soil, and be at the water front, and have the ambient of the dark deep waters of the South as well as the shallow, flat, windy area, good fishing grounds nearby, diving areas...

My wife is also quite fond of Sheffield area, and I liked it too.
We drove to Port Sorell from there. It's a sort of a bearable distance.
The river mouth seemed interesting for sailing. Are you guys sailing inside or out in the ocean ?

I live between Kingston and leslievaleon the southern side of the river it is beautiful and green and has lovely views and soil is red. on the wind surfing side there is windsurfing at kingston beach in a south easterly or northeast .summer is best for this. there is very good windsurfing at sandy bay beach offering long runs across the river for nautical mile. living on the western shore means that you usually have to travel about 40 minutes for a sail

Any more questions on port sorell. Feel free to pm me.... We sail bit of both. out to sea is quite like lancelin sea conditions... Inside the bay is great for blasting on high tide and when tide is out, the river is there with the sand bar all the way out to the island.. Bringing up an awesome flatwater spot.

Basically for good fishing the lakes and rivers are the go... Probably 45min plus to these areas from port sorell. But there are a few close by.

Hi Obelix, there are so many spots to sail down the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon River area and many look great, but there are very few people down that way who windsurf, so you rarely see anyone out down there.

As far as the Huon River is concerned, I drive down along the River to a place called Hideaway Bay (out near Huon Island) for work most days and the wind is often excellent, but I've only sailed out there a few times. Of those times, one sail was with Steve and it was literally epic (7m on 107 in about 20 knots and had a ball).

The D'Entrecasteaux Channel also offers what looks like excellent spots, especially out off Gordon and Verona Sands. However, our prevailing WNW winds would be mostly off-shore at these and a lot of other places in the Channel.

As most people have said above, the most popular spots for sailing are on the Eastern Shore. All within a short distance you have bump-n-jump, flat-water and waves. There will always be others out when sailing these spots, unlike any of the spots down the Channel/Huon area, where you're likely to be the only one.

For me, I do the shorter drive to work each day and put up with the extra driving for sailing, but it would be nice to live right next to where most of the sailing is happening. Having said that, it's only 40 minutes to Doran's.

If you move to the Channel/Huon area you may find the grass to be greener on the Eastern Shore!!

We have now traversed the whole island, and have found that we liked quite a few areas. Especially the area around Sheffield and the whole area between Kingston and Port Huon.
Having said that, every place has it's own magic, so we feel spoilt for choices.

The peninsula between Kingston and Cygnet seems to be ticking off many of the wish-list items, so it was great to hear from Dave that the sailing is possible there.

We came from "thinking of moving to Tasmania", to looking for an ideal home. Once we find, we'll go for it.

As for being the only one, I seem to be good in motivating people to get into the sport. I'll infect everyone around me with it

You could be right, move down there and get more sailors infected, I'm sure Dave would back you up.
Used to be heaps of people sailing in the old days on the river so good to get that back. We Lauderdale bogans are a lazy bunch we should be out exploring.
Cloudy Bay on Bruny Island is as good as Marrawah for wave riding but the winds are very fickle so you have to get the forecast right....... when it's on, it can be epic.......... or sh#thouse

These are fantastic.
Flat water, wind, boat ramp, islands, great views, surrounded by a great looking nature...
I could easily see myself living there.

This one was a couple of hundred met. before the footy ground nice view, not so sure about the launching spot. (Some ones suffering wind withdrawals)
