Ant, wavesailing is great and places that have great wavesailing conditions tend to have more wavesailors in the general windsurfing community. However, not everyone wants to get wave gear and go out in the waves, most are content to just get out on the water and go for a blast, which is why the GPS units have become so popular. Nothing too much has changed in sailing trends, just that those who want to blast back and fourth can do so wearing a GPS. I'll end up sounding like a broken record, but the GPS buzz has done more for windsurfing than anything else in the last 10 or or so years so we'd be better off as a windsurfing community embracing it and encouraging each other to get involved and get out on the water improving our skill level than knocking it.

Glad you're not into kiting ...

Houston's just shiit-stirring, and jealous he can't hit 40 knots (along with most of us).

a lot has changed in 10 years. its the modern freestyle sailing that has drawn a lot of the younger generation in , and they blast backwards and forwards quite happily without a gps.
gps is without a doubt big in Tassie, and keeps people interested but thats because we are full of old crocs! who cant bend at the knees.
L ets keep the sport interesting and diverse so newcomers can decide for themselves, especially the kiddies!!

go gps, go waves, go freestyle, go blasting and bump and jump.

Hey, I'm not trying to defend GPS sailing, I'm just excited about it and enjoying it and have been wearing a GPS most sessions for the last 4 years or so. I know my sailing has improved as a result. The gear is way better now than 10 years ago, but GPS units would have been just as good back then with the older gear. It's obviously not the GPS units that are getting people into sailing Damo, it's people who are sailing getting GPS units to add another dimension to their sailing (through providing a reference point and challenging themselves to try increase their PB's).

By the way, it's not just Tassie sailors who are into GPS sailing, there are almost 850 GPS sailors signed up to the Aussie GPS TC and over 2500 competing in the International GPSSS.

This post was to congratulate a new member to the Tassie Speed Seekers. Please stop hijacking these posts and demeaning what a lot of Tassie sailors are enjoying. I know it's s*!t-stirring, but throw enough mud and some of it will stick.

Thanks for the welcome! Yup, it was me out at Doran's Road pre-work session, as you will have seen, I've got a long way to go before making any significant contributions to the team! :-) I thought keeping a record of my sessions would be a good way to see my (hopefully) progress with windsurfing.

I'm not quite sure how the scoring works with the gpsteamchallenge, if I post my (pretty ordinary) track does that negatively effect the team score? (If so, happy to hold off contributing until I progress a bit)

Only two weeks or so to go until I get my new (well secondhand) kit and stop having to lug my 80s vintage beast around!

Geepers that's dedication, niiiiice work I'm pretty sure it was blowing southerly that morning, so you would have been better of sailing at Cremorne Lagoon (the pond)

Nope you cannot negatively effect the team what so ever and it is REALLY good for seeing improvement and pushing yourself I've only been sailing just over a year and it has reeeeeally helped me improve and push myself! The GPS Challenge is great fun and we have a great team

What kit did you buy?

Post all your sessions Klass, ordinary sessions don't change the team score. If you post all your sessions you can see how your improving in your own little sessions table. Sometimes I wear my gps wavesailing, but only in small waves, wouldn't want to loose it!! All the windsurfing disciplines are fun, there's no limits to the sport, what ever you want to do on the day, or the month, or the year, just never gets boring. You too can end up with a shed full of wave, slalom, speed & formula gear.

I'll have to try the lagoon next time, there was a bit of a swell coming in and the boat ramp was in a wind shadow so it was a pain to get out into the wind (and back).

I can see that I've picked up yet another 'gear' sport :-) (and I thought all I'd need was a board with a sail :-) )

The board I'm getting is the one here (120L, comes with a 6.6m sail):
www.seabreeze.com.au/Classifieds/Windsurfing/Boards/~b1sk3/2003-Fanatic-Cross-Cx-Sebastian-Wensel-265-cm-120-litres.aspx

Also picked up a 5.2m and 4.7m sail off ebay for $10 and a mast to suit.

That kit looks great and a good price too. The 6.6m sail is a good size for most conditions and that board should have enough volume to get you going in the lighter stuff. Bet you can't to get it and try it out!!

and to Ant
'we'd be better off as a windsurfing community embracing it and encouraging each other to get involved and get out on the water improving our skill level than knocking it.'

All this in two days, c'mon mate settle down, if we cant have a little laugh now and again the world would be a very boring place, especially this forum.

As far as **** stirring on the Forum is concerned, Poor old kazza received a hiding last week.

Cheers
