The 2017 - 2018 windsurfing season is here ! A few windy days have already been enjoyed in the North and the South with some inspiring images appearing on the Seabreeze forum. Fortunately the warmer weather is just around the corner for those who are holding out until the fingers and toes aren't so frozen.
Now that the club is formally incorporated the Calendar is fully packed. The unearthing of some fabulous old trophies such as the Marrawah cup and the Cape Country trophy will see these being awarded and engraved this year. Trophies will be allocated to the Northern and Southern Free race events and the King of the Tamar. A new youth event and and two learner days are also on the programme.
The calendar is a balance of Social, Freeride, Wave and GPS events. Hope this inspires a season of fun, competitive and social sailing.

The details, meet times and on the day venues calls, will be discussed via the Seabreeze forum closer to their upcoming dates.

A few things to add

Titles will be awarded by the following calculations:
WAVESAILING (n=4) - points allocated as 0.7 for first, 2.0 for second, 3.0 for third, etc,
with results from best two rounds recorded.

Also note the dash for cash is the Sandy Bay Regatta not the Hobart Regatta

Just a query. With the Marrawah wave event on the same dates as Stanley, will there be days allocated for different disciplines. I would like to enter both, but will be hard to be in two locations at once.

Great calendar of events. Would it be possible to not include the 4th wave sailing event at Marrawah within the State Titles and have it as a stand alone event (with its own trophy) - so there is no overlap between disciplines? This way the last Free Race event at Stanley could be scheduled for the first or second day, allowing points to be allocated ahead of the prize-giving on Sunday night (if that's the best night to do it)? This would mean the Overall State Titles would still be based on 2 x Wave Sailing, 4 x GPS5 and 4 x Free Race events. If we could allocate more wave sailing events during the season, we could increase the number that count toward the State Titles.

Looks like i may have to purchase a wave board

I think foiling needs to have its own category. But having not ever foiled I'm not sure of its capabilities. To me it seems a whole new different ball game having a board out of the water compared to a board on the water.

You are most likely right there Kazz, also there are Foils and then there are Foils...
as most people buying foils down here are getting the low performance, easy to use foils. About ten of that i know.
i think about three are getting race / high performance.
I am sure the race guys will make it all fair and Fun though.

Everybody knows how quickly Christmas comes around, right? Well shortly after Christmas is the Northern Wave-Sailing Event so make sure that you are prepared!

Get some of those new moves under your belt. A good water start and a successful gybe might just win you a competition, as well as a trophy! Get that ratty old board down to Relic and get the repairs done, and the right number of fin boxes put in (2). Replace all your ropes and universal joints, hit the gym and build up some muscle - breakages of any kind will not be considered a reasonable excuse, and sailing under duress may even get you some brownies.

Don't forget though - you have to compete in at least two events to qualify, so I am going to put my name down for the Men's Northern Wave-Sailing event, and the Womens Northern Wave-Sailing Event - I am sure that will all be okay.

Quite a season ahead for the brand new, squeaky clean, all above board (occasionally above board, but under more often) Windsurfing Tas club. Perhaps we should throw down the gauntlet to some of those Big Island clubs to come down and compete with us...for sheep stations.

I am pretty sure that the "prime" number of fin boxes would be either 3 or 5 though 1 might also be considered to have some retro charm....

Foils are going to improve light wind performance and therefore open up the opportunity to sail (or race) in those conditions. If we try to separate foils, I think we'll see windsurfing lose out in the long term. I can't see any reason not to include foils? It's just like choosing your board and sail size - in light winds you either go to a bigger board and sail or a foil? Putting foils in a separate category is only going to reduce the number of sailors racing on standard equipment. I think open it up and it will sort itself out.

Like Dave I think we are going to love the foils as a light wind fun aspect of windsurfing.

Go fast or go slow it will still be heaps of fun in light wind.

The Sandy Bay Dash for cash will take on a new look with all the foils that will be in it. Should give that event a new lease of life and be great for spectators.

I think that it ought to be a Le Mans start in a shallow bay, and the finish should be at the start line, just to keep things interesting.

Q - If you ride a quad, do you ride with 'two left fins'? Luka rides a Quad...
Q - By your logic, is 7 fins also the "prime" number of fins?
'1' may have 'retro charm', but is definitely not a "prime" number of fins, on several counts

Ok so one is not a prime number for fins and probably has little retro charm unless you collect Spielberg movies....

Entrants to WT Events must complete an Event Entry Form prior to competing and sign ON and OFF before and after every day's competition.
NOTE: All events are open to longboards, race boards, windsurfer one designs and any other type of windsurfer. Foils are also able to be used instead of standard fins. It is expected that if winds are light, sailors can choose to use foils rather than bigger boards and sails or longboards. This should make it easier to have racing completed in light winds.

Can you confirm if this weekend is "expression session" OR heats style event?

Its an Expression session and looking at the forecast I am thinking Bakers is a good chance on Sunday.

I didn't realise until now, Round 3 of the wavesailing is held midweek on a Wednesday. I am in strong opposition that a state round of wave sailing be held at a time that is only accessible to those in the North. The argument that only 2 rounds go towards the wave sailing title should not even come into conversation, a state round needs to be accessible to all in the state. It's great to have the event, but I believe it should not be counted as a state round when held on this date.
Sorry I didn't pick this up earlier.

Thanks Buzzy. We discussed that during the Windsurfing Tasmania meeting on Friday night for reasons you mention, and that is sorted. The midweek event will still be held as an official WT event, but will NOT count to the state title. There will be ANOTHER additional WAVE event that will be held on a weekend that will be a STATE TITLE contributing event. We will get copies of the minutes out to all members, and the "official" revised calendar.

If anyone has any suggestions/idea generally please let WT committee know. We try to make it fair and inclusive for everyone.

Hi all. I talked to Buzzy about this on Saturday, but if it's too late don't worry about it. I can't make the 2nd Freerace event down south on the 29th Oct (booked in to fly to Qld for Clydes sons engagement party). This was booked in about 10 months ago. I should have said something earlier but can the date be changed for this event?

Um, I am just wondering about the foil racing. I think including foils in the conventional board racing might be good, but I can say from experience, that foils are hard to control and I think as a result, can be potentially pretty dangerous. I think that people intending to race a foil probably should have some sort of level of proficiency, but how you administer that is going to be difficult.
I am willing to accept people will disagree with me on this one, but I would suggest that foils shouldn't be included in races until we see how the format and control/safety issues are able to be overcome. How do amateur comps get run O/S?
I certainly don't want it to look like I'm blowing my own trumpet, but I have a little bit of experience on a foil and I would not feel comfortable racing a conventional board next to myself on a foil. I don't feel comfortable doing that, but others might, and if they're out of control, then how do you deal with that? It might make some feel like they don't want to compete because there's a foil wielding maniac out there!
Thoughts?

I have no experience with foils myself.

So i suppose there are a few questions/comments:

1) how many people have foils and do they intend on competing with them?

2) I can find out from Australian Windsurfing Association what rules they have regarding foils.

3) as it is freerace as opposed to "tighter" slalom style racing, there is not as much need to sail close to other sailors (maybe a "distance" rule for people on foils???).

There are already lots of protocols for windsurfing events (eg inbound wave sailor to give way; give way to starboard on course racing etc). If in doubt making such a rule in the meantime (eg foil gives way or minimum distance to conventional boards) could work.

At this stage WT events are open to foils, but I think like many new innovations, that may well evolve.

Not that i race but i think you are right there Marty. I certainly would not like to be lying at in the water at the marker buoy after a fallen Gybe with a guy on a foiling coming screaming down on me , potentially a bit out of control!.
From what i have observed it will take quite a bit of practice to be slightly competent going in a straight line and ever more at turning.
Mixing Non foilers with foilers could lead to problems.
If there was enough foilers they could have their own division, so they are all in the same boat then. I don,t think there will be enough foilers this season anyway.

Perhaps WT should reassess after the season, looking on to next?
