Just wanted to say thanks for the welcome from all the Tassie sailors here. It's great to see so many super keen people still enjoying and promoting the sport. You have awesome locations and great wind when its on. Looking forward to sampling plenty of spots.
Good to meet up with everyone at the Tailrace movie night. Great movie and inspiring. Thanks to Paul Tenteye for that fantastic footage of Stanley. Hope to be back on water by Wed/Thurs after some compulsory sightseeing in Hobart. (Sussing out the spots while we're at it) Cheers Gabe and Chris.

Hi Gabe and Chris has anyone mentioned the Spot Guide lots of sailing spots and info on each place
www.thespotguide.com.au/TAS/index.html
If you are heading up the East Coast there is a food and wine festival at Bicheno on Sat.
I'll be there hoping to get on the water too.

Gabe and Chris if you come down south and looking for a sail keep a close eye on this forum, follow the Spotguide and you'll know where we are. Next weekend we've got a Slalom Race fun day (Sat I think) would be great to see you there for a race or just a sail

Hi T11 and Houston, Yes we did meet John at the movie nite and love the "Spotguide". We're fairly open to going to any place where there's decent wind, so we'll definitely keep an eye open on this forum for the best sailing location and chance to sail some new spots and catch up with the "locals ".
The forecast for Stanley is ESE wind Fri(15-22)/Sat (20-30) while the East coast also has good SE winds for Fri/Sat.at 15-18 and 18-22.We may end up on the East coast this coming weekend. Food and wine fest gives us a good excuse! Anywhere good on SE there?
Is there anywhere for ESE winds around Stanley?

Great to meet you guys! Hopefully Tassie turns it on for you.

I'd be sticking around Stanley for at least Friday! (sorry there's no spot guide yet... )
You should to get early enough to get on the water and make the most of it - hopefully you'll get 3 or 4 hours in the channels. If you get on the water early enough - sail over to the 3rd channel will save the painful walk, take drinks/food so you can wait for the water to allow you to sail back to the cars.
Maybe Barry or Cookie can confirm, as they sail there every day () - but pretty sure based on the current channel directions, ESE will be excellent.
If the weather stays as forecast, you might not make the Bicheno festivities

Have a look at the below link - as the sand bars move a little, the tracks provide a rough ideal of where things are...hopefully.
Have a blast!

Don't forget to visit Marrawah only a hours drive from Stanley and world class waves.
All the spots you'll find on Johnny's Spotguide. Greens Beach is the most accessible and depending on your experience in the waves is probably the safest. Most of the spots work best in a south westerly direction but Greens is great in SW or NE. If the forecast is NW don't bother going as is all onshore.
If the swell gets big Marrawah is worth a look even if you don't sail it.
There are a few reasonable spots in the south to sail but no way as good as the north. If you are coming down to Hobart hit the Salamanca market Saturday mornings then come for a sail in the afternoon.
..............happy hunting

Stanley channels are pretty much sailable in any direction. For the East Inlet it's easterly (NE to SE) or westerly (NW to SW) and for the West Inlet its northerly (NW to NE) or southerly (SW to SE). The East Inlet Third Channel, with its curves at either end will cater for the widest direction changes.

The biggest problem I see is the unpredictable low pressure system forecast for later in the week. BOM shows the low centred over Stanley late Thursday. Wind direction: circular!!!

A bit of luck and persistence will help. Should be wind at some stage, but how strong, from what direction and for how long is bit speculative.

A broader area of pressure gradient lines between a high and a front or low is always more reliable.
But you never know your luck!!

Johnno, let me know if you are in the area, will come down for a sail if it is on.
GJK, If you get a northerly and are in the east, try Georges Bay at St Helens. Good flatwater and I'll be there. Also, just north of Scamander is Shelley Point, I'm told it is great for wavesailing in the right conditions, North-east?

Hey JohnnyHuett, Houston, Bazf and Iceman thanks for your input. I can see you guys are right onto the weather forecasts and using this forum to communicate the best locations is a real boon to everyone that windsurfs and kites.
The forecast has changed for the positive again, so Stanley is looking good for Thurs/Fri.
We had a good look around Pipeclay lagoon, Mortimer's Bay and "the so-called Pond". Great looking locations. Low tide and no gear prevented a sail this time.
Thanks for the links and tracks for the Stanley inlet JohnnyHuett. Helps with visualising the runs. The 4day synoptic shows a low forming right over the top of the island so some wind and rain will make an appearance, hopefully with plenty of east! I definitely will be checking out Marrawah at some point and get in for a surf. Too much playing tourist doing walks and not enough surfin 'n ' windsurfin ' .
A trip over to the East Coast and the Friendly Beaches is on for a southerly Sun/Mon. and maybe stay a few days to relax a bit. Pete will probably join us so we'll hopefully meet up with Iceman and with T11 and have a sail with the local crew then.
Cheers, Chris and Gabe
