Hi guys, a question for those who sail on the Derwent in the warmer months, particularly around Sandy Bay and Kingston beaches, what's your most frequently used sail & board size? (And your weight as well, please).

I'm just trying to figure out what I might need

Cheers

Hi mate, so we normally start getting a few light seabreezes from Oct. Then get more consistent through summer. Typically around 12/18 knots but can get a few windier ones. You need something fairly floaty just in case the wind drops but saying that you can certainly go out on less than 100 litres if its windy enough. Just gotta make sure you dont get stuck out there. My go to combo for the river before I got into foiling was 130-140 litre board with a 7.8 to 8.6 and my weight around 85kg. But like I said you can you a variety of different gear.

Yep , same as Steve says....Sandy is also great for any type of foiling too
We often get light 10k/15 k northerlys on summer mornings and all through the winter too .
Upstream Rose bay and Montrose are good Northerly spots.
Eastern shore....Howrah Tranmere are good
Kingston not so good, I live there and the wind often just doesn't push into the bay except a strong sea breeze or northeaster.

Gday WW
As Steve says...
I'm 70kg. Used to sail with a 100L freestyle board with a big fin and an 8m non cammed sail. It's often hit and miss at Nutgrove (sandy Bay) in a seabreeze. Quite a few days it comes in 10-12 knots - not quite enough. Most of the time you can sort of pick when the wind is going to drop out - it'll back off a bit first. You def don't want to be on the other side of the river when that happens.
Have swung onto a foil now and it's massively increased my time on water. If you're thinking about investing in some new gear, a foil would be well worth considering.

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated.

I've actually picked up an old Windsurfer One Design, complete with a couple of equally old rigs, and thought I'd do a bit of light wind cruising until I get back into the swing of things (haven't sailed for a couple of years), so staying afloat and getting back to shore on that shouldn't be too hard.
I do love going fast on modern gear but I find cruising on the old longboards is really fun as well.

Kingston Beach is my home turf, but as I've noticed , the wind seems to be offshore most of the year except for the summer sea breezes. Waiting for a sunny day and a sea breeze to test the gear, and eventually I'll explore further afield and buy some modern gear, with your advice in mind.
