There's been much talk of getting a couple of the start boards over to the lauderdale area so we can hire them out for a nominal fee (to cover repairs) for guys/gals who would like to give windsurfing a crack. Damo put me in touch with a newbie who's sailed at one of the SHQ clinics, lives in Tas, has no gear and wants to borrow/rent some gear just to get started. I can lend her some of my gear but would be keen to get hold of one of the start boards to lend out, i'd take full responsibility for the gear. damo suggested ask for a deposit then charge a nominal fee for rent. Can we get this going, Dave M, Kazza, what do you guys think, I could take one and maybe someone else in the area take another. If sandy bay wants them back for a session we can organise that. I would like to get this going.
Stew Gordon or Tony Fitz are probably the best people to run it past SBSC (in the first instance) and then it would just be a matter of picking one of them up one weekend. We could say that they will still be based at SBSC, but as an association WT will be borrowing up to two of the three boards regularly. This should cover us for whatever we wish to do. For events such as the learn to sail day, we'd hope to borrow all three boards.
Alternatively we just ask to take our two boards (or three if we wish to buy the SBSC half of the third board) and keep them over on the Eastern Shore, effectively severing our ties with the SBSC as far as the start boards (and rigs) go.
Clyde and I are picking up the 3 Start boards and rigs from RYCT tomorrow morning to bring back here to Lauderdale. Clyde has contacted Richard Scarr and said we'll be needing them for upcoming events. I think the boards have been a bit neglected living where they have been, and during the last school holidays I noticed all the Start boards were being used down at the RYCT. What's the deal with the RYCT Dave, should they be using them anytime without notification? When people don't own things they tend to not look after them. Anyway, so if WT members want to teach people to sail or know someone who may want to hire 1 for the day, they'll be at our house for now, so contact Clyde or I. If we hire them out though who's to say they may take a liking to them and never return them? That could be an issue.
I think that's a fantastic idea, I'm sure there would be lots of people around that would love to give it a go. I guess Kazza and Clyde you will need to keep a log of who is 'hiring' the board for the day and get contact details so the risk of the board not being returned is reduced and if you are worried you could ask to get their license details? Hopefully everyone is honest though!
Kazza, that's great, could you let us know when you have them, as I said Damo put me in touch with a girl called Angela who is keen to hire a rig just til she gets set up. I will ring her tomorrow and let her know what's happening. Great also cos you're a chick and we need more chicks in the game cos chicks drag more chicks and guys in
Karen, the fact you saw all of the Start boards being used down at the RYCT is great, that is the aim, to get them used and out there (I can't see how that would be a bad thing)!! They are over 6 years old and in very good condition considering the amount of use they have had. Good that they are now going to go over to the eastern shore to be hired out, but we do need to be mindful that SBSC own half of one board and we should probably offer to buy out their half if we want all three boards. One whole board and kit cost around $1200 I recall, so depreciation on half means WT or SBSC could probalby buy out the others half for next to nothing!! Maybe we offer $200 to SBSC to buy out their share (or accept $200 for them to keep one) and we keep all three (or just two) on the eastern shore?
Anyway, be good to sort this out amicably and get them out and used.
Just wanted to add that we should be careful how we progress with use of the Start Boards. As an association I'm not sure how we are covered, insurance-wise, if we are hiring the boards out. This has been discussed in the past. While they were at a Yacht Club, we're covered under their insurance.
Be good to put some guidelines in place before we take posession of them. Something along the lines of: Lessons with a WT Member are by way of gold coin donation Hire requires person hiring to become a member of WT for insurance purposes and bond required to cover breakage (say $200) Hire fee might be free for upto 2 days, but thereafter $20 a day
We also need to let the SBSC know that we plan to take these boards as Richard Scar was just borrowing them off the SBSC and should really have said that we need to talk to SBSC. A lot of us WT Members were members of the SBSC for many years while racing there and they hosted the National Formula Windsurfing Titles which raised the money to buy the boards (we made $4000). I'm just rasing this by way of background that if we just take them with no explanation the SBSC are likely to get their nose out of joint and that's no good for any of us (a lot of us still rig up on their lawn and sail out from the club when sailing in the river - even though we are not financial members). However, if we discuss what we plan to do with the boards, all should be fine.
Hi guys, Clyde (president) doesn't read the forums. His internet is blocked at work and only allows certain sites but he has email on his phone 24/7. He doesn't like to talk about WT stuff on the forums either. Please email or ring him about the use and hiring of the Start boards, meetings or anything else up for discussion or you need answers to. Cheers, Kaz
