Hi, newbie to the apple isle. Looking at the forecast there seems to be a NEer on Saturday shifting Nw Sunday. Just wondering if Shelly Point, Beaumaris is a regular sailing spot on the southern side of the point? Or what about Friendly beaches for some open beach wave sailing?

Cheers,
Steve

Hey Steve, not sure if its sailed regularly but it would be great in a NE.
Could also keep an eye on douglas river, chain of lagoons, 4 mile creek, redbill pt at bicheno and friendly beachess. Friendlys seems to be the most reliable. I've only ever sailed these in NE patterns but theres plenty of places which would work in southerly.
Also further south you've got Kelvedon and Marion Bay, SSW is ideal for these
This weekend is looking a little light, North coast might be your best bet

Cheers Dave, Looks like its backed off on the forecast. The NW looks good but! Pretty keen to get out adventuring and discovering spots and opportunities.

Well, didn't get there. But at least have an idea of what to expect. Wind swung to the NW earlier than I hoped and the swell was on the small side but there are plenty of beachies to try. Looks like sweep could be an issue on the open beaches but guess that goes for anywhere. Stopped in at Kelvo and watched some vids so keen as to get a run there as that's the favoured tack.

Marion Bay last weekend, 20 to 30 side off... fickle but can be epic

So what's the windy season for those spots? Vids are in Feb. Whats the prevailing wind, as southerly or south-south westerly? Was talking to a surfer dude who told me about bone yards which I think you can see in the background of one of your Marion Bay pics. Can you sail that spot or is it more down the beach to get the wind? Argh so many questions :)

haha yes next question!

ok so Friendly Beaches is best in a NE, typically a summer pattern

Marion any time of year. Usually after a big westerly, keep an eye on it as it swings SW as the low moves past. Swell can be fickle but a decent low can push something up from south. I sailed boneyards once, it was crazy - a mess of wind chop blown out to sea against the faces. too bumpy and was almost dead offshore.. But sometimes it looks ok...
l launch at the viewing platform front beach and sail upwind, feels very offshore due to bend in the beach.
Anyway Marion isnt that reliable, but epic when it does work

Kelvedon look for an east coast low.. Any time of year, but it only works a few times a year

Cheers Dave, found some old threads and other potential spots. So if Kelvedon Beach is on, what is Mitchells Reef near Lisdillon like? Apart from the rock on the inside.
