Hi Everyone - quick update on the Tassie windsurfers taking on the country.Angus Calvert (AUS-1141) and I (AUS-32) were in Sydney for the last week competing in the Sail Sydney event, where we competed on the Olympic youth class RSX 8.5m. There was a strong contingent of girls competing in the RSX 8.5 class from QLD and a team of windsurfers from Korea racing on the open mens 9.5m sail. I finished in 7th (11, 8, 8, 3, 9, 3, 6, 6) and Angus finished in 11th (13, 11, OCS, 11, 12, 10, 11, 12). The racing was held at the Woollahra Sailing Club, with conditions that built throughout each day, starting at 10 knots and building to upwards of 20 knots. The conditions were gusty and shifty, making consistent results difficult to come by. Racing on the 8.5m sail against the 9.5m sail made racing difficult, as half of the fleet had a huge advantage in terms of sail power and fin size. My strongest point of the regatta was my upwind sailing in the strong wind, where i managed to round the top mark in 1st almost everytime, and I need to improve on my downwinds, as I lost plenty of positions on that leg. Angus had some solid tactical decisions over the event, find time all over the course by sailing smart, but was making results hard for himself of the start line, struggling to get away cleanly.

My next journey is to the ISAF youth worlds, in Malaysia, which starts on the 27th of December. Angus will be competing in Australian youth championship in Sydney, starting on the 7th of January, with the hope of taking out the title and bringing it back to tassie for the 4th year in a row.

Happy sailing!

You guys/girls did really well competing on 8.5m sails, when almost everyone else was on 9.5m. Probably why downwind was so difficult huh?
We had a small Formula fleet that thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the regatta, even on the same course as the RSX....
Great to see such a strong OZ RSX fleet competing hard.....Thanks for making the trip to Sydney....

Well done guys, I know how that feels Jock I used to do ok upwind only to have Dave and Steve run me down before the finish if you want some big sails for training I just put some sails and masts on the free stuff thread.
Good luck for the upcoming events.

Sounds great, always interested in reading your reports Jock. A week in Langkawi for the worlds will be hard work! (99 islands, turquoise sea, etc, etc.)

Top stuff Jock Not easy course racing particularly against larger sails. Good luck overseas and don't forget to win.
